Wa Uunet

There were definitely some issues this morning. I had erratic connection issues at about 5 of our subscribers(all ADSL) this morning. At 1 point, connecting to international sites were fine, connecting to local sites were impossible. All cleared up at about 11.30am, frustrating as hell when you're trying to work, and of course its all my fault in the customers eyes. :(
 
The bittorrent was severely limiting the line and thankfully has been bought in line.

Like MaD suggested it would be nice to provide a balance, eg after hours the shaping is less for torrents, but they may be technically challenging.

While the speeds are again good and pings back to normal we will monitor it a bit longer before allowing signups again.
 
ok hxx you download 90 gigs worth of web pages and email i understand

what i dont understand is how someone or what someone would do to get 3 gigs of info a day with p2p or torrents?

thats a kuk load of bandwidth to using on what

only you know and you gettin defensive so your either lying or you download alot of something but who knows cept you :)
 
I'm thankful for the transparency & information that waRichard provides. I managed to signup with WA just before they suspended new account signups, and I've been very impressed with their service & product offering from day one.
Keep up the good work WA!

Nice sentiment but realistically if they've managed to block torrents then they'll never unblock them. Why would they?

Good morning guys and girls.

after some heavy days in hospital I am back home now, not much healthier but I just live day by day. I cannot leave bed anymore but thanks to my son in law my computer is now accessible to me from my bed. My body might be wrecked but my mind and my tongue are still sharp!!!

Many things happened those last weeks and I am getting slowly into it.
But one thing just sticked in my nose immediately.

How in the world UUNET thinks they can shape whatever they want. I have lived all that in my past days in Germany when similar things have being tried and I must say ITS NOT WORKING!!! Each restriction causes an immediate response from people who have an answer to everything.
We are paying an exorbitant price to both Telkom and ISP's for what I consider not even a decent service. Instead of improuving the service so ALL applications can live together, its taken away from small users and its given to others. Do we all not paying the same price? Is our money worth less then that from a business? Its just disgusting.
With a certain p2p shaping I can live, I accept and understand, but a total blockage I will not accept and appropriate answers will be given.

Just a thought. We all paying our electricity, telephone and water on the amount consumed. Provide enough bandwith, give for example 30 GB for free and people who wants to use more make them pay. But you guys thinking, why make it easy, when you can do it difficult. *shaking head*

I think uunet did the right thing, why should a small group of users make the package unusable to the rest?

I know most people like bitorrent but I have hated it since the first day it came out. If you dont know any other way to download your illegal software or what not, then tough luck. I think uunet is way better off now than they were earlier. Infact with uunet I now get better pings to WorldofWarcraft servers than I get with the telkom unshaped account.

I think to uunet, a job well done for once.

I can do at least 6 gig a day with a decent 512k connection surfing the web and checking email, also uploading my clients website + updates etc.

As I said before, my work and my life IS the internet, and I make a decent living off of it. Yet, I am forced to pay for sub-par service and technology?

Getting told what I can or can't do with a connection I paid for is not what I really want. If tomorrow I decide to VPN and/or do whatever on a port that nobody would think of using, why should I be negatively impacted for that?

Its very stupid, and hopefully ICASA would have a thing or two to say about this. I'm patiently waiting.

If you dont like a service as it is, it is as easy as canceling the account as you previously did. No one going to stop you in doing that. Shaping is part of SA internet, and will stay that way for some time to come. Just live with it or move out of SA.

I have access to around 3 terabits (thats 3000 gig) worth of porn that I can download via HTTP or FTP.

Bittorrent is the "new age" of getting things. I'm old school. If I can't get it via HTTP, I don't bother. I don't even have a torrent client installed on my PC, and I pulled at least 90 gig when iBurst was uncapped.

You are totally right, Internet is all whats left to me and every month we pay more then 1400 Rand for a nearly non-existant service. And the little whats left is taken away. Its a shame what people are trying to do for their own personal benefits.

Well with that sort of attitude why should anything change? Telkom - dont like their prices? Just live with it or move out of SA. Bad service at a restaurant? Just live with it or move out of SA. Corruption in governmnet? Just live with it or move out of SA. Are you in customer services by chance? Still, glad your games are playing faster - otherwise you might Just live with it or move out of SA.

Well I dont see anything really getting better?

Anyhow you took what I said out of context. Did I mention any restaurants? Heck if you dont like the resturant leave it and go to anothe one, there is more than enough resturants in SA. With internet on the other hand though we dont have that many choices...so if you really want something better its a really good choice to move out. Resturaunts....its actually better to stay here...
Your wise crack words is not really funny, atleast some people here think it meant something...

What uunet is giving is not nothing (except if bitorrent is everything to you). I get more than enough out of uunet. As mentioned above, I am also old school, but more old school than using http. Irc xdcc bots still work perfect (so more than enough anime and whatever I want for me) and game pretty much work like a dream again. Even world of warcraft which is international. I dont have any reason to moan anymore.
 
When I buy a car, I want everything what comes with the car to be functional.
I don't tolerate, when the dealer tells me, it comes with a radio, but its not functional.

And that applies to everything I pay good (especially exorbitant) money for it.

i agree with cele not everyone will download and upload 6 gigs a day for work, most ppl will do that because of p2p so uunet shouldnt say its uncapped because they are kinda capping by not allowing p2p and bitteront

yes i know there 2 -3 of you who dont use alot of bandwidth via those but majority of ppl do.
