WACS submarine cable agreement signed next week

Wow! I'm happy for you guys! I probably won't see the effects of the whole thing since I'll be back in Germany end of the Year but finaly SA is becoming better and better :)

WOW! This is beyond awesome! Prices drop by 80% then a further 75%? No more capped or shaped internet could become a reality before the 2010 world cup! Yippee!!

Dude, sorry to wet your parade:

Most experts however agree that the lower international bandwidth prices will take some time to filter down to consumers.

Meaning keep your lube handy, the big guys are not done with us yet. They get the 80% decrease in costs, they don't pass it on to us. We have too keep taking it up the rear...

The significance of this is not in the details of the cable, but the fact that we have more competition. EASSy will introduce some competition to SEACOM, but it doesn't look like much of a threat. Clearly, though, SEACOM is a real threat to South Africa's operators, so they are making sure they build a really competitive cable for the future. It's great that it's a South African initiative, and not Nigerian one, like Main One. Everyone knows that wholesale price drops don't automatically translate into retail price drops, but with so much supply of bandwidth, there's got to be some impact down the line.

Don't you just hate it when that happens.

Well, in an attempt to stay positive - currently a gig can go for about R60 if you're lucky. 80% drops it down to R12/gig. That's cheaper than local.

So, for a start at least I only expect the local/international separation to fall away, and everything to go at the current local rates.

Next you are going to hear that we have a severe bandwidth problem inside SA and it will only become better when Neotel/MTN/Vodacom finish their fiber project...

my first thought too...
I swear I never used to be so pessimistic!
From now on I'm gonna try harder to take every thing as it comes, and not wait to be disappointed.

According to industry sources the price of SAT3/SAFE based international bandwidth has already decreased by as much as 80% just because of the threat of competition from SEACOM."

WTF! So we are getting shafted while secondary sales fat asses in big BMW's get richer now? Where the fk is consumer rights in this mess? Im serious someone needs to get Carte Blanche on this bs.

Various companies are involved in the WACS project, including Infraco, Vodacom, MTN, Neotel and Telkom. The WACS agreement will be signed on 8 April at Vodaworld, a positive development in the quest to achieve the planned operational date of 2010/2011.

 how is this good news in any way

n*****s

The 13 000 km West Africa Cable System, which will connect South Africa to London, will provide the African continent with an additional 3.84 Terabits/s bandwidth when it is fully operational.

Holy Crud! That's a lot of bandwidth!

People fail to see this. The word "Collusion" springs to mind when it comes to these companies...

Edit:
I honestly do not see my badwidth price dropping from R60 to R12(-80%) due to Seacom and then to R3(-75%) due to Wacs per GB.
This is the ultimate form of hype ever unless they tell me it's going to be free soon, uncapped & unshaped. Maybe Xmas 2010, like all the other good things?

3.84 Tbps - That's theoretical maximum capacity. Light up capacity will be the standard 80Gbps or so just like SEACOM.

I must say, as negative as I try to be about bandwidth costs, I can't help but get excited about a probably near future where I no longer have to watch my cap like the last muffin at a pot party.
