WACS update

WACS will have an initial lit capacity of 500 Gbps - out of a design capacity of 5120 Gbps. That is less than 10% :(

commercial testing is only expected to commence in February 2012, instead of the initially envisaged September/October 2011 start date.

WTF???

Meyer explained that heavy rains in the Western Cape region caused some problems

What heavy rains? It's been a rather dry winter.

commercial testing Q2 2012, cable goes commercial Q4 2012, difference to the ADSL users in any way...never

WACS will have an initial lit capacity of 500 Gbps, and Meyer said that he expects this capacity to grow quickly to satisfy the ever growing demand for bandwidth.

Price dependent.

Plan ahead?

Can't understand why the Yzerfontein station and "last mile" to ZA networks was not built in parallel with the undersea cable.

Seems like this Telkom's lack of planning that's at fault.

This is a non issue folks, as of right now it is the last mile and backhaul links that cost all the money.

These are the issues that need addressing not international fibre.

You guys at WACS are doing a good job and delays are unavoidable sometimes. But really, why come up with such a pathetic reason that heavy rains in the Western Cape caused some delays? It has been pretty dry this winter, compared with prior winters, so says the weather wo/men and the people on this forum.

Let's consider the fact that heavy rains caused the delay. Commercial testing has been delayed by 4/5 months from Sep/Oct to Feb. Has it been raining that much to cause the delay of up to 5 months? I wonder what the other reasons are. In future please reconcile your facts before making the information public.

Agree!

Typical Telkom! Looking for excuses!

They could not had it better, been weeks with nearly no rain. Are they afraid the cables will get wet? Did they not take the Cape winter into account. Mr Meyer, I do hope you read this since you are in the article - Is it unfair that a normal thinking person will just think that Telkom exec's just keep on lying? Is it so endemic in your company culture?

Don't people read the entire article?

Meyer explained that heavy rains in the Western Cape region caused some problems with the landing station construction, but the project is on track again.
