Wagyu like beef

i still have not eaten proper waygu

but then again im too scared im going to order this R500 piece of meat and someone is going to furk it up

resturants never got a steak right for me

at home its brilliant

I mistakenly bought a packet of wagyu dry worse and it was given to the dogs, who too refused to eat it.
I’ve seen the wagyu steaks and wondered, but to be honest am off Fleisherei meat with exception to their Fillet. Their steaks shrink and change shape and I’ve since found PNP sell a Rib eye on the bone at R129 P/KG. Prep it properly and it’s a winner, else stick with a woolies Rib Eye

Definitely some of the best steak I have had. Especially marinated in the Woolies barbeque marinade. Haven't had wagyu though.

Food lovers Willowbridge is selling Wagyu and Wagyu biltong. The steaks look quite aged (has that matured brown beef look), the marbling looks quite decent though. Has anyone given it a go?

I usually buy their Ribeye. Has been one of the best steaks I have made myself on ye 'ol webby.

Haven't seen the steaks.

Saw some burger patties and tried those and while there was nothing wrong with it can still make better myself.

It's at the beef butcher section far right (last tray before it goes form beef to lamb/pork) , they have added a big A3/4 signage that educates you on wagyu etc.

I asked them where they source it from and they told me "Stellenbosch".

Yeah the patties had a link on to the farm but for the life of me I can't remember it.

I know it was on the approved list etc.

I shop at the Brackenfell one.

I've had proper Wagyu beef and can honestly say the extra price is not worth it. Its very nice and buttery and tender, but at 5-10 times the price of a normal steak its just not justified.

I'd rather braai a decent piece of Rump or something and enjoy that

I went through a somewhat "steak journey" this year. Tried braaing it all myself, different techniques and cuts. From Picanha, rump, sirloin, ribeye etc.

Ribeye is champion. Wagyu will have to be exceptional to persuade me to go for the extra $$$

Picanha with a nice thick piece of fat is my current goto. Medium rare on the fire wth just salt/pepper. Nomnoms

Exactly what I went for. The picanha I bought had a pepper/coriander layer over the fat, which I did not like and had to remove so my fat was quite trimmed. But it came out delicious.

You won't get much wagu outside of Japan AFAIK

That is exactly the confusion.

You’ll get lots of Wagyu everywhere, it’s a type of cow.

You won’t however get Kobe outside of Japan which is a region and the Wagyu produced there is named after it.

Kobe = Champagne.
Wagyu = Sparkling Wine.

And just because it’s Kobe also doesn’t make it amazing by default. Just like you can get **** champagne that is easily beaten by sparkling wine from elsewhere.

Pick n pay Glengarry also been selling Wagyu for a few months now, though must admit I haven’t checked recently.

And? What's it like?

Left it on a rack in the fridge to dry out and cooked it in a cast iron pan over a high heat last night. Absolutely delicious with sherry, mushroom and cream sauce (remove cooked steak from pan, add mushrooms and fry for a minute, add sherry, add cream - don't allow to boil).

We usually get WW rib-eye which is also heaven.

Fleisherei has these but they look rather a poor attempt at wagyu.

There's a few shops reachable from the above list... anyone tried any of them? Do they look any better?

I've had Wagyu steak at the Fleisherei bistro and have also bought some to braai. In my opinion it's not worth paying extra for it. Well, except if you are very rich. Then I'll probably eat it every day.
