War on piracy

Hmm....
/ponders busting some people (and companies) :p

The only non-free software we use is the OS... Windows XP... all registered.

but I have to say... I just hate the BullShi7Association. Bunch of liars, extortioners and pirates.

“It will only be possible to halt counterfeiting and piracy on a global scale through this kind of collaboration between governments and the private sector — both to educate people about the value of intellectual property and to take action against trade in illicit products,”

Rubbish....

THE ONLY WAY TO FIGHT PIRACY IS PRICE AND DISTRIBUTION!!!

everything else is a waste of money and time.

Estimates suggest that reducing piracy by 10 percentage points over four years could generate an extra 1 200 jobs in the local IT sector, R6 billion in local industry revenue and R490 million in additional tax revenues.

My bs detector is going mad!

its not like they actually write u a R100 000 cheque... They only give you money that they recover after a law suite - and this is UPTO R100 000, it could also be 50 cents :P . I read it on itweb.co.za

So that can take years and years, and meanwhile u still have to work at the company? I guess its a step in the right direction for the fight against piracy in the business sector, but I dont think many people will actually be getting R100 000

Ja... it's 10% of the amount of the settlement or judgement. But honestly.. how many companies use R1 million worth of pirated software?

It's just another scare tactic / publicity stunt by the BullShi7Association.

This will really boost the go open source movement. If only they get ReactOS sorted out soon.

Well, if they use the same method as the music industry to determine fines, it could get to 10mil very quickly.

Ja, would love that... it looks good and all that...

This sort of piracy thing, coupled with the current worldwide recession, will lead to very interesting decisions...

I honestly can't see South African courts going for that. Never heard of a fine that much in South Africa. The settlements are typically in the thousands. Companies that large generally have their act together when it comes to License registration.

It's all a load of carp.

"Piracy is bad"... "you could lose a lot of money"... whoooeeeooeeee... chains rattle in the background.

give me a break.

Piracy is a terrible thing, think of the families of those missing sailors.

At least the Indian Government is actually doing something constructive about the problem.
