The fun is starting now, we currently testing Rosebank towers
Tower 12, Rosebank, Sig : +-27%
avg Ping: 110
AVG Bandwidth : 10KB

Can't wait for all the results...

Don't drink 2 much ppl :)

We want some usefull info...

On the other hand, just drink!!!

Somebody on the wardrive want to come to #wardrive on irc.zanet.net and keep us posted? Would be cool to have some real-time action regarding what you guys are doing...

THanks for he Beers RPM, since discovering your "package", testing has ended :)

Ahhhhhh, the beer-y goodness of downloading at 6K on a 256k package (@ Mintek tower)

Hope you brought a can opener. You could spend time on the road making a beertenna!

I have an inferiority complex. But it's only a little one.

nonroker - Sentech users qualify as IS IP's. ... we're told this the moment we log into the ftp server ;-)

"220 Welcome to Internet Solutions FTP service. You are listed as an IS client."

Also, the fact that it's downloading at 4.6K vs 8K indicates that while "stupid" it's certainly indicative of the performance users are getting.

The sad thing is that I'm not trying to use ftp.is for a speed test. I'm actually trying to download something I need from there. Even assuming that Sentech IPs don't classify as IS customers I would expect to get 8kB/s. The bottleneck appears to be Sentech in this case I'm afraid, particularly since as soon as I browse/download from other sites that 4.6kB/s drops proportionately.

We are currently having lunch at the Dros in randburg (next to virgin active) we still have much beer and will be here for another hour (expecting to leave here at 3:45)

Just ask for the geeks with laptops...

Chilling at the Dros, signal 22%, speed averaging 5KB/s, as has most of the towers we tested today, with the exception of Rosebank.

The bottom line speeds show that due to the packet loss, and (probablY MPLS) on Sentech's backbone our connections have valleys and peaks, as TCP detects the packet loss, backs off, and then slowly ramps up the speed again. We do see 10KB/s speeds as a peak, but with all the backing off, the average download speeds inevitably end up at 4-5KB/s.

This is ****, and we've gone a long way to proving that it's not just 2% of users having problems. All the towers we tested so far exhibit the same behaviour. We've eliminated the signalling as a problem, since at some towers we were no more than 50metres from the nodes. Signal never seems to go above 52%, no matter what, and the signal strength doesn't have any apparent influence on the speeds.

IPWireless' technology might be cool, but Sentech's backoffice, and bandwidth management is making it SUCK.

And they're quite obviously lying through their teeth.
