Even though I have both a Huawei Y210-0200 and a Samsung GT-S5280 which were bought in the last two months I was told by a Telkom agent today that these were not compatible to use the free Wifi offering.

If I understood him right, this due to the fact that these do not have the right authentication method "EAP-SIM" in order to connect to the network.

Before they changed the AP names with the 1 prefix to it, everything worked fine.

Maybe they could've told me this beforehand. Whats the use of implimenting an authentication method that only the upper class of handsets (The agent did tell me the S5 has this method) are capable of?? Why not use a method more common?

I find this very shortsighted on Telkom Mobile's part to say the least.

Its amazing how people complain about free stuff ...

The technology has been out for years its not something new ... you should complain at Samsung for not including it.

BTW the functionality is in the OS and not the hardware.

In France they have been running it since 2012 ...

It isn't really free as I have bought airtime and this is one of the benefits of reloading with a large amount.

Don't comment if you do not want to contribute constructively.

Their "free" wifi isn't something for the man on the street. It's included with their other products so as such can be a drawcard or reason for using them. If it's not up to specs people have a right to complain. The technology may have been out for years that doesn't mean it was ever used to a great degree and as such companies like Huawei and Samsung are starting to deprecate it. Telkom should get with the times and use the standard method of authentication.

How is this their fault? You bought phones that don't support a feature that has been out for a while now

Get a custom rom with the feature on.

Well maybe if I knew this was needed I would have. Like I said, before they changed the AP names with the "1" prefix, everything was fine.

Is there a way of upgrading the android version to fix this? Would like some advice here from the more tech savvy please!

This thread just proves how companies are often blamed for people's own shortsightedness or forgetting to do proper research or not to RTFM.

On top of that nobody wants to hear that they were wrong and then they are stuck in "Wonderland" forever believing themselves incapable of making mistakes or bad decisions. Take some responsibility for a change! :whistling:

Wonder if anyone actually gets to use this service.
Do people have the time to sit at a McD and download

Why not?? What better time than while having a bite? You've obviously never done this? Lots of people make use of hotspots.

Of course they do but only for a limited period which constitutes only a fraction of their overall monthly usage.

How about 10gb free from 11pm to 5am for 1 day once a month.

I'd jump at that offer.
