Warning!! Snow Leopard uses consistent bandwidth!!

Bonjour mDNSResponder

I did the Apple fix http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3789?viewlocale=en_US.

Unfortunately it did nothing to resolve the abnormal data usage through my 3G modem. About 40 meg per hour with no internet apps running. So if you installed SL don't leave your modem connected if you are not using it.

Little Snitch show the mDNSResponder to be active and exchanging a lot of data. Polling Vodacom DNS servers?

I am not sure what to try next.

I'm sure Vodacom is gonna have quite a few upset customers when they get their bills at the end of the month 'coz most ppl are unaware of this problem!!
I actually just bought myself a Globesurfer X1 Wireless Cellular Router (allows me to plug my 3G card into it to share the connection wirelessly) because this problem doesn't occur when you use wi-fi to access the net.

Got a reply from Vodacom's data helpdesk. They looking into it. Downloading VMB 3.04.08 now so will test with that tonight...

Nope, VMB 3.04.08, and it's still chowing all my data. Reverted to using my 3G card plugged into my GlobeSurfer X 1 at home.

Bonjour and 3G

From the info that I can find on the internet relating to this problem it seems to be the case since Snow Leopard came along. Bonjour will send and receive lots of useless data but this will only happen if you are connected to your ISP with a 3G wireless "dongle" Regardless of the network provider or the type of "dongle".

Maybe the Globesurfer option is the answer. Not sure where one will buy it but I am sure to look.

Also I got the figures wrong, not as bad as I thought. Per hour it waste about 10 meg, 4 meg download and 6 meg upload. So in 24 hours you will loose only about 240 meg!!! In 5 days your 1 gig cap will be gone.

Yip, definitely does seem to be the problem. I'm sure Vodacom is gonna work overtime when everyone realises they've been charged loads for out of bundle rates.

I got my GlobeSurfer X 1 from eXpansys - http://www.expansys.co.za/d.aspx?i=181292
Took about 2 weeks to arrive. I have my 3G card permanently plugged in and connected at home (my 3G tower is sooooooo stable here, never disconnects or acts up). When I'm out and have to use the net on my Macbook I now just use tethering on my iPhone :D:D

I see the GlobeSurfer X 1's price has gone up slightly in the past week - I payed like R330 less than the current price. Probably because of the R/$.

Snow Leopard and 3G Connections

I got the new Globesurfer X1 from Expansys and it works reasonable well.

The internet connection freeze 2-3 times per day.
When I tried to update the firmware I was not successful on the option.com website. Could be the Mac?

An enquiry to Option informed me to contact some French Cellphone company.(Expansys buy Globesurfers from this crowd so Option will not support it directly. So no luck there. Website is in french only.

Expansys.co.za could not really help and told me to post the problem on their forum!!

It is now possible to get Option products from the authorised local company www.novia.co.za at half the Expanys price.

Weird! I've had mine for about a month now and have had no problems. I must admit that the 3G at my house is like soooooo stable - best 3G mast in my opinion :-)

Hey guys, I am looking at buying a MacBook Pro. I only have a VC 3G data connection, and this thread sounds scary.
I use a Huawei B970 Vodafone router on wireless.
Will this resolve the problem as well?
Thanks

Shouldnt have any problems with the router. Will only have problems with a USB 3G card. You'll love the MacBook Pro :D

Thanks Rapidblue

Thank you very much for drawing our attention to the problem.
I also have a 3G USB Novatel MC 950D Modem that I would have most probably used during December, whilst on vacation.
OK if I buy the Mac Book Pro, I will leave it at home and take the Vodafone B970 router with instead.:D

Actually installed Vodafone Mobile Broadband 3.04.10 (actually downloaded it a while back but only installed it now). Problems seems to be resolved!! No more excess data being sent :D
I see Vodafone has a 3.04.11 on their site already - will try that tomorrow ;)

Hi guys,

Apologies in advance if this question has already been answered.
I am toying with installing snow leopard my imac but because of this thread and some problems reported with freehand mx i have held back.

If i install it, how easy is it to rollback?

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
