Warning to potential subscribers

8ta = NO

I have 100% signal and at the moment I am running at 0.2Mbps. (During the morning over the weekends I can hit 9!!) But during the week after 8, forget it, totally unuseable. I am cancelling my contract.

Well said.We agree. They are selling more bandwidth that they do not have available;so all the 8ta subscribers are re-sharing bandwidth with decreased performance. The advertising authorities should be reading the peoples statements, but I feel when it comes to authority in the isp field...who's the subscriber in comparison to a service provider? We have cancelled with 8ta.We are willing to take this matter to the Authorities,if there is no joy the court will have to issue relief against this excuse for isp service.Keep it up;all industries need commentry like yours to keep the on edge and upto standard.

lol ... we moved this monday and now using a different tower is a bit further away, in clear site, on top of a mountain i stay, -95db with 20% signal .... from bad to worse man ... from bad to worse..

cellc ... 100%

what feels me in this whole thing is that I STILL, CAN PLAY COD4 with 100ms ping, WHY ON EARTH ??? Why do all other games ^^ out but cod4 ?? im baffled :)

but all other things are wrong, connection drops, horrible speeds, even going into edge.

still lucky im prepaid. ;)

I'm not sure what happened, but I've now been connected for 175 hours and getting about 3Mb/s downloads. If something somewhere was upgraded, WOOT! :D

It seems that all these 3G connections are temperamental. I have had CellC for 10 months and when it works, it is excellent. But now and then it starts dropping signal, and then will go off for 3-4 mins while it renegotiates the connection.

The call centre are awful. Yesterday, most of Cape Town did not have internet but they did not know. After 40 mins on hold, I got the technical help desk and they straight away told me the problem

I think the savings are outweighed by the poor service and am going back to ADSL (Via Cybersmart) when the contract period ends

Just yesterday made download of service pack for office 2010. ~400M
Rock stable speed 9Mbbs. Houghton / Killarney
One more time - if you got plenty of bucks - take 10M ADSL for a x000 R/pM
Want to save money - take 8ta and be creative!
3G Stick position, external antenna e.t.c will work.

I get an 8ta signal in my area and want to purchase the 60GB special. A few questions if possible:
1. Is it worth getting a 21Mbps modem or is the basic 7.2 sufficient for Jo'Burg
2. How do I find out where my closest tower or strongest signal is for my area (Bloubosrand/Northriding)?
3. Ist it worth getting an external area like Poynting? How can I test if it is pointing in the right direction?

Your advices will be greatly appreciated.

  1. That depends on what speeds you want (are hoping for). I generally get around 3mbps on my 7.2mbps but for some reason can't even get the required 512k when streaming from supersport. Just so you know - 8ta totally sucks with that.
  2. If you have an android you can download OpenSignal Maps
  3. The aerial will only help if you have poor signal. If you have strong signal (like I have) the aerial can't do anything to improve the crazy congestion on 8ta's network.

Simple economics, MWeb would be the winner in financial terms if Telkom agreed to free peering so Telkom/8ta aren't interested.

Hi Digibanks99!

Their are some complications with the upgrade of your tower. We have our high level engineers and project managers involved in this. They do not have a timeline for us as yet, but we will let you know once we receive feedback.

Nice cliches! But at least you are trying. Some providers say they are trying but do blow-all
