hey guys be VERY careful. nearly destoyed my hp laptop today thanks to 3g. we all know the dashboard is screwed, but i am so used to being mobile, meeting to meeting, finish with client, close laptop, it hibernates.... get to next appointment open it starts up ... NOT WITH 3G. basically the 3g hangs my machine so so so bad when i close the screen. the screen actually stays on, and the little fan underneath stays in whatever mode it was in just before the hang... which today was OFF. laptop into bag, an hour later, laptop out.... couldnt touch it... (like hot potato) couldnt get it going for like 3 hours... but thank *** its ok now... thought it was fried

so be careful

Thats why I NEVER use the dash. It is not stable, buggers with windows and hangs. Without the dash my laptop hibernates and when I wake it up everything works fine (the connection is dropped as normal) but everything works.

yeah, fair.... but why sell a product that could have legal come backs??? coz the average joe blob wont know that....

Well I'm sure you'll prolly be double checking from now on to be sure that your HP has gone dudu-bizes before packing it away.

I'm sure many will find your warning useful :).

Quick question...how do I use my 3G prefered dialup without the Dash? When I connect with the dialup icon I get a message that the modem hardware has failed.

I use GPRS at this stage.

The only way I can connect is via the Dash...and having endless problems with the Novatel card but I got it stable now...

i have the same problem with the sentech usb modem. actually the whole thing doesnt automatically shut down when one closes the lid and the "fan noice" is at its highest. Its dangerous.

Did you check the Tools -> Options->Preferences->"Allow standby or hibernate" option?

The dash can be configured to either allow or deny hibernation, depending on your usage profile.

If I read you correctly, you had a dashboard hang before this happened? One thing I noticed is that when the dashboard crashes, it's the front-end that disappears and the process still sits in memory.

Can you elaborate on the sequence of things before and when this happened?

If you open the dash enter your pin code and close the dash afte it has verified the code, You can use the dialup.
or
You can disable the pin code (use a cell phone, thats what I did). Then you use the dialup connection (in my case 3g preferred). It then works like a standard dialup

voda 3g... it is definately setup for "allow hibernation". order of events? pretty simple... goes into hibernation or standyby and never comes out... service pack 2 maybe?
