They would never take a side. They'd anger the Russian oligarch overlords, and if they sided with Russia directly, would p off the West (whom they hate and like to castigate, but are willing to take their investment money).

The irony...
 
Back in the day there was an organisation called the "Non aligned Movement" created specifically not support either US or Russia. Could the abstentions be the modern day successor?
 
Well it depends on how much oil Russia sells us at a discount for supporting them.

If they still charge us the same price as the EU and US, then no. :laugh: If we have cheap fuel, then yes :p

Palestine whataboutism is one of the ugliest things to come out of this whole thing. On the same level as "all lives matter"

and to answer your question - SA intervened in Israel/Palestine and managed to broker some level of peace. So we have never abstained there... and both sides have done things to break that peace.

Comparing Israel to Russia shows either malice or idiocy...

But they're already welcome in the US. Their government has no problem at all with terrorism as long as it targets people they don't like. If they didn't welcome oligarchs the people might get real control of the government.

Are Ukrainian and United States oligarchs inherently better than Russian ones?

When the US fabricates excuses for invading a sovereign nation that's alright, but when Russia does it is bad?

This is not about SA's abstention, but rather the hypocrisy of the West.

Western governments do not care about the occupation of the Palestine by Israel, but they are livid over the occupation of Ukraine by Russia.
 
It depends. How many resources do we receive from Russia. Can we source it else where for the same cost?

Look. I'm all for standing up for the oppressed but if it affects our fragile economy or what's left of it. Can we really afford to?

I read somewhere we might end up with R40 a liter for petrol? If that happens regardless of voting. Then surely we will be on the wrong side of history
 
I vote for South Africa to be invaded next. We can do with a good government cleansing. We can afford with them all lined up and executed.

Because one of those scenario's has real world implications.

Many people said the MPs in Parliament must vote with their conscience against an evil person like Zuma even if it will cost them.

Why not apply the same principle when voting against an evil person like Putin.
