We should rephrase the question to " Was the SA GOVERNMENT right in abstaining?"
 
It's either they agree or they disagree, don't have the balls to outright say no to the west, no balls to do the same to russia, you're either for autocracy, death, and wholesale destruction of a country just because it can be done or you're not. Period.
 
If it was wrong then the option to abstain should not exist. Damn snowflake melenials always want someone to hold their hand. If I want to be with Russia on this then I want to be with Russia. It is nothing of nobody's business.

I would break the sanctions and take the cheap oil. Hell we need it more than the world needs us against Russia.

It is probably in our best interests to stay out of these things. Our social fabric is hanging on by a tether and our economy is in the sh*tter, so we cannot afford any knocks by throwing our lot in with one side or the other.

Ramaphosa is deliberately trying to say as little as possible with that word vomit he released and I don't blame him. That Zuma abortion must also shut up.
 
Personally - I am not sure if it was right or wrong for the government to abstain.

Let me be clear - I did not vote for the president of SA. Nobody did. Our voting system allows us to choose a party, not a leader. The leader cannot even defend himself against internal party conflict, let alone world conflict.

I do not approve of the ANC, but the people have chosen them as the majority party to govern.
The ANC as the majority has the greatest influence on foreign policy.
The ANC is a fence sitter government, as pointed out in another thread - they dilly dallied on Al Basheer, on Dalai Lama, on Syria, on Zimbabwe. There is no clear direction.

Had they abstained and made clear their reasons - good for them. Had they voted yes or now, well that would have been more decisive. Any of these three actions would have been a clear statement.

But they abstained followed by a series of contradictory statements.
As soon they come clean on what their position really is, (although we have a good idea of what it is), the poll question can be answered.

Having said all of this, if I were the guy who could make the UN vote choice, I would have taken a stand and voted against Russia. Not that I support that country that we all love to hate (US) or to support NATO, but rather because the bigger economic and humanitarian threat that the war or operation instigated by Russia poses on the world is worth standing against.
But then - that's just my view. I do not speak for the rest of SA so its mute.

Secondly, I like our we are taking the moral high ground here (good vs evil), however, when USA created so much strife on various continents, without a peep from the same crowd, because they were the "good" fighting "evil". The US is in this for the money, as always. Just like with their invasion of Iran, this push for Russian sanctions is to push up the price of oil, in their last-ditch attempt to sell the rest of their oil at a massive premium. They want to sell as much as possible at high prices before renewables reduce the demand for oil.

Their fracking is going to decimate large areas in the US with the current push to produce oil, as the price of crude increases.
 
The US also showed they are chit scared of Russia, even with their "mlitary power".
 
What I am scared of now is rejection by the West AND if somehow Russia has success, them as well. China probably still happy to abuse South Africa.
