Watch TV?

+ PVR + Extra View.

Before you know it, they will charge you for breathing in the same room as your decoder.
PVR & Xtraview is the same thing, you don't pay twice

Repeats, if you can't find something to watch on DSTV then you spend way too much time in front of the TV
Adverts, the only time I see adverts is during sport, the FFwd button and DSTV on Demand sort out the rest

Check the XBMC thread; basically it's the plugin. XBMC with HTPC http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php/345425-XBMC-Supersport-Addon

This is touch and go to be honest, most of the time the streams are stuttering all the way through making it pactically unwatchable (for me at least, on a 2mb adsl connection).

XBMC does have an Aljazeera plugin (24hr news channel) that can be installed. There are a few news programs to select from and they stream live 24/7, no stuttering at all for me on their streams.

I want to watch it on my TV in decent quality but I am not prepared to pay those DSTV criminals.
QUOTE]

Why would you call DSTV criminals. It is the other way around. Think about the horror situation if Multichoice, Mnet and DSTV never surfaced in this country, and we were stuck with SABC only, like we were since 1976 to 1986.

DSTV subscription, what is it, around R700 a month ?

Thats R23.30 a day. Is that criminal.

I think you are confusing DSTV with government that regulates the airways and causes monopolies.

Me, I pay DSTV gladly, and I will pay them that for the sport channels only. What they give is more than fair.

feel free to pay for whatever you like.

Its difficult to answer but there is so much you can do.

A HDPC is certainly worth the money if you are willing to put in some effort in getting it setup.
Things like netflix, hulu, live streaming sites, psuedo tv, your own downloaded content, photos music etc are all available from one source.

France24 is the only news channel I think that is freetoair if you want to install a dish and freetoair decoder.

I once invited a friend to watch a game of rugby with me. Wanting to impress him I used the XBMC plugin to watch the game. Needless to say the quality / stuttering was so ***, we ended up missing a quater of the game and going to a friend to watch it. So yeah, it works nicely at times, but sometimes you really want to just kick your pc :)

But again, can you watch stuff like CNN, free channels like news stuff and weather etc etc?

I got Al Jazeera working on Plex but CNN doesn't. There are quite a few channels that work perfectly on Plex.

Really? Same thing?

You saying all of us with PVR and Xtraview that pay close on R700 are talking cr@p?

I remember clearly having to pay an additional fee when I upgraded my old decoder to the SD PVR.

Then again when I got a second PVR and wanted Xtraview.

I paid close on R700 PM until last month when I cancelled the whole lot.

Premium is R559
PVR & Xtraview is R65 (it remains R65 in total whether you use one or both of those functions)

So you should pay R654. If you have decoder insurance then its obviously more
