(not mine)

Yes I know... It is such an overdone photo. I'm still intrigued by it and would like to try it.

If you have done it, please share your pics and share some tips and do's & don'ts?

My big question is this. I do not have a flash or macro lens for this. Will it still be possible?

I do have pretty powerful lights (can be dimmed) that can be aimed at a certain point. Can that be used when shooting completely manually?

I tried this the other day.. but when the shutter speed was high enough to freeze the drop, it was under exposed... So have to rely on flash I guess?

yes and no .I did the same but was outside with sunlight worked fine, I have a flash light with a diffuse cover also worked fine ... then tried the normal camera flash. On board one also worked . 1/200 shutter speed with that flash works fine

I had a quick try with a head lamp and my 55- 200mm lens.

Had to boost ISO to 1000 to get anything visible. Taking shape but nowhere near usable shots.

Will go and dig out those power spotlights this weekend and try again.

I did this with my canon 600D with the 18-55mm and its normal flash

Nikon D7100

Those shots look nice. Mine was nowhere near that!

One problem that could make it harder for you is the 18-55 I could go really close and the flash helped me a lot ... What other nice lenses do u have

I've got a 35mm F1.8 and also have my 18-55mm kit lens.

That's the thing. I have no clue what lens is best suited for this. I would think a macro lens or at the very least some extension tubes on normal lenses.

well I used my 18-55mm canon and it has a macro on it but thats on the 55mm side and I used mine on the 18mm side . Would u show some pics :D of what u already done

Its hard to say I think the 18-55mm is fine even if it doesnt have macro.

This is what I do is

1. A take milk to start with in a flat bowl
2. Put my camera on a tripod with and use the 18mm side of the lens
3. Use a pen place its point where u will drop the droplet. Then focus your lens on that point( I use live view mode)
4. Switch off the most of the lights and use the on board flash and just take a normal pick with the smallest f/stop and shutter speed of 1/200 ( place must be really dark but not to dark u still need to see what u doing)
5. adjust the shutter and flash till u get the right exposure on the milk
6. now put your camera on cont shooting for say about 10sec or 5 for how ever long your flash can fire before it times out
7. push the button and start droping it in the milk( I use colored milk with a driper) where u center it with focus on the pen

After that look at the shots. U should get some good shots cause your shooting in a dark room and only lightning up the droplet for a few 1/1000 of a sec

18-55 should be fine. A macro adapter would require you to be right on top of the drop basically. And the focal depth isn't great imo.

I would say that most important is a flash and diffuser to allow you to crank the shutter speed right up. I will play around when I get an off day. Will try some colour filters on the flash too.

Awesome photos so far.

Gosh need to try this again haha been some time

Here are 2 of mine from a while ago:

This is a nice shot, but the lighting is too harsh. It would have been a great picture if you used diffused side lighting.

Literally used no equipment.. took a bowl of water... had my canon with 400mm lense on..lol..and took a flash photo with built in flash..
