WD My Cloud 4TB

Awesome. Now I really want to need one. haha.

One more question. would it be necessary to connect this to a UPS as well?
or am I just too paranoid. Don't want it to conk out due to stupid Eskom power failures and surges.

Also, with its power requirements so low, a cheap 650VA UPS would probably last quite a while.
I will then probably connect my router to that same UPS and still have juice when Eskom fails us yet again.
At least that way my internet will still work and I can stream movies to my tablet if I need to. or watch series off of the WD Cloud.

Good idea, it will work perfectly.

So. I decided to buy it for myself after a bit if funds that came my way. Will test and give a review on Monday.

I bought it today as well. Decided to get it from Takealot instead of Kalahari. Main reason? that R40 saving isn't worth it if there is a problem with the device and I need to return it. Kalahari takes 6 weeks, takealot has never taken more than 1 week (based on the 5 items I have returned already)

I should point out that of the hundreds of products i've bought from Takealot over the years, only 5 or so(that I can remember) has ever given problems.

Hopefully mine arrives before yours. :) I also tend to shop at Takealot. I still miss their Amazon interface. :(

Takealot return process is amazing :) I've returned 2 faulty devices and they replace it or refund it and no questions ask.
I always use them over Kalahari anyday!

Let me know how it goes? i'm saving up for it haha

So. Got the drive yesterday afternoon. Setup is easy enough. Download the software, follow the instructions and it is up and running. Setup of users should be done via the dashboard as well as the shares.

Some tips

Before setting up. Update the firmware
Think how you want to set it up. I've created shares for my photos, iTunes library and for my SO.
Copy via. Ethernet. Much faster
Setup the My Cloud with a static IP address. (Thank you google)
If you want to copy form an external us drive, connect it to your computer, connect the computer via Ethernet.
Time machine for Mac users is easy to setup. But remember to state how big it may be

Problems:

I had an issue with file permissions. Not sure what happened, but it is working now
I ran out of plugs on my multiplug

The iTunes server part, if setup on the MyCloud , can i then copy my entire music, apps, movies etc onto the mycloud and access it through iTunes on my Macbook, I assume it'll show up under Shared library?

The iTunes 'server' on the WD is represented in iTunes as a shared iTunes library. I've been able to listen to the music, but videos etc. isn't available. Those work with Home Sharing, which the WD can't do as it is Apple specific. Which kind of sucks. What I have done is setup all my computers at home to connect to the shared folder, therefore everyone can access the same iTunes library, video at all. (If you hold down Option button when opening iTunes, it allows you to select a library). It loads a bit slower, but now allows any of the computers at home to home share the same library instead of having the same movies and TV series on different computers.

Some other feedback:

1. Use Ethernet to copy the initial data. And if you have a Gigabit ethernet switch / router. The better.
2. The disconnect bug should be resolved with ver 4 of the firmware. I haven't experienced it yet. But I did allocate a static IP address for the WD My Cloud outside the DHCP range.
3. The apps work well on iOS apps.
4. If you have a DLNA enabled TV, the DLNA server should work well. The odd thing is that my Apple TV is picked up as a DLNA device. But Apple has no such spec (and I haven't figured out how to access it yet the videos, audio yet)
5. There is a bug, quite an irritating one. If you copy from USB drives via your computer to the WD My Cloud, it screws up the permissions. You can't delete folders / files. It is quite random. There is a workaround, but not recommended for non-techies.

Otherwise it runs it works as advertised.

Bit the bullet and bought the 4TB version after months of research into "other" NAS or backup devices , they all fell short in either being too slow like PI or being to cumbersome like desktop NAS.

I tried all sorts of workarounds...lol

Takealot sent me a mail yesterday that it is with their courier partner. Hopefully I will receive it today.
If I didn't order a stupid VGA cable with it, it would have been here more than a week ago.

I will need to figure out how to setup a static address for it. Google to the rescue.

My router is not a gigabit one, but seeing as my two switches, range extender and nano station are all 150mbps anyway, there is no point. It would be waaay too expensive to upgrade all of it to gigabit. And I'll mostly use it through wifi anyway.

Just watch our. Wifi never runs at the advertised speed. Also. All devices share the 250mpa, so it will be slower.

Yes, I know.

It doesn't get anywhere close to 150Mbps.
150Mbps = 18.75MB/s

At the moment I get roughly 400 - 500KBps
Almost 40 times less. But I can't complain seeing as it travels from my pc over Wifi to router, then roughly 60m over Cat5 cable, goes through 2 switches along the way, to a Nano Station and then to a range extender. Received also via Wifi on other PC.

I know, its a mess. I dread the day that something goes wrong and I have to set up the whole thing all over again.
Luckily I've made config backups but that doesn't help at all if I have to replace the router and the same one isn't available anymore.

I suspect that 250mpa must be a typo. MPa (megapascal) is pressure.

I am under a lot of pressure, but I doubt that is what you were refering to.:D

Lack of coffee error ;)

But it might be the bloody pressure of the person trying to copy 1TB via wifi.

That will take ages. I will need at least a 500GB backup and on my network.

According to my calculations I can do about 1 - 1.5GB per hour.
But that might be faster as the backup will not have to go through all the mess I described earlier.
I'll put it close to my main PC to enable faster backups.

Too bad it only has one Gigabit port.
Then I can link it to my PC with crossover cable and enjoy super speedy backups.
But then when my PC is off I can't access it from anywhere else.

Or I will just have to get myself a Gigabit router.

But then my network will look less like the spiders web it currently is and more like tangled spaghetti like confusion

I get 30MB/s stable over my 300Mbps (37.5MB/s theoretical max) 5.8GHz wireless network, the 2.4GHz network does around 20MB/s.

It depends on what equipment you use. A R300 300Mbps access point will never perform anywhere near a R2000 access point, the same goes for the adapters you use to connect to the network.
