WD My Cloud 4TB

The problem isn't its price or quality, it is in my case about distance.
My data and internet needs to go quite far, hence the bridge and range extenders.
Currently this entire setup set me back roughly R4200.
To upgrade it from 150Mbps to 300 would cost significantly more. Not worth it in my opinion.
Then I would probably get 900 - 1100 KBps. NOT worth the extra cost.

Just received my 4TB MyCloud. Just finished with the unboxing.

I was quite surprised to see how small it is. Expected something much bigger.
Maybe the youtube guy had freakishly small hands??

Its flashing its impatient orange light at me. So I should probably finish setting it up.

So it seems I am the unlucky one.

Mine isn't working.
It wasn't a orange light. It is yellow. Indicating no network status.

Waited till forever for blue light. So far nothing.
Changed network cable as instructed. Same problem
Changed port on router. Same problem

Dag naggit.

Restarted it and went for a cup of coffee. Came back. Blue light showing.

So it seems their 2 - 3 minutes for boot and network discovery are not correct. For me at least.

Well. Discovered a problem yesterday. Transferring files from the Mac took forever. So guess what. OS X Maevericks has a bad implementation of SMB2. It slows it down to about a 1/4 of the speed. I forced OS X to use SMB1. It works vetter

There are temp and permanent fixes that you can a Google. Do at one risk

Have you tried copying files over by connecting mac directly to mycloud via cable?

So far I'm quite happy with it.

Getting transfer rates of 72MB/s which is fair with my bad network.

There were a few problems.
1)it would randomly restart. It has only done this twice now since I got it.
I left it to copy overnight and the next morning teracopy failed at 91%
Checked the WDCloud log and the device restarted at 1:02AM
No idea why. It just did. There were no firmware upgrades or anything. It checks firmware at 3AM.

The second problem I suspect is PC related.
I couln't open it on the network and dashboard didn't work either. The next morning it worked fine.
Again, I have no idea why or what the hell happened.

It still worked on my phone, just not PC. PC restart, router restart, cloud restart solved nothing.
The fairies must have fixed it overnight.

I have found that on the rare occasion you need to use the IP address in the browser to access the console rather than the host name. Don't ask me why, it just happens.

Secondly, I have had one experience when it dropped from the network. With a static IP as well as sleep mode turned off it dropped from the network and required me to unplug it then replug it in before it showed up.

No, haven't tried it. But it won't help either. We have 2 Macs and 1 PC at home. All using the MyCloud. The PC works fine. One Mac is now modified to run SMB1, but I won't recommend it unless you know a bit about terminal. The other Mac is a 'work' Mac, so no funny changes on it until I am able to confirm it works without a problem.

mmm, have 2TB loaded in teracopy, Dell connected via cable directly to MyCloud - only getting 11MB/s.

Copying large .mkv files 4gb to 40gb from another USB 3 ext 3.5 though.

Hello All. Ok here's the deal I bought my cloud about 5 months ago maybe less. I take it out of the box set it up let it do all of the updates. Then I start backing up all my data to the drive approximately 250 gb mostly small files so my transfer speeds weren't that great some times 16mbs/ all the way down to 1 kbs it never ran consistently constantly kept falling of the net work iphone app would connect sometimes and some times not. I was beyond frustrated so I decided to transfer all my files that took almost 2 weeks to transfer to the drive back off so I could smash the cloud with a hammer... Not really.

I decided I was going to do a full restore on the drive (i had tried the simple system restore to-no-avail) Well it took me another two weeks to recover my data then I did the Full Restore it took about 12 hours or more to do. I got everything set up users shares ect I started to transfer my files back (movies) I have 85gb it took one hour! I set up my phone apps they work flawless thumnail generation fast the difference in the operation of this drive is night and day. I had almost all the same problems everybody else had tried almost everything that was sugested nothing worked. This drive works better than it did out of the box my firmware is v04.00.00-607.

So my thinkng is this: The linux operating system combined with the automatic firmware up grade out of the box set some kind of confict with linux and the firmware. So if you buy a new my cloud set it up do the firmware upgrades then before you transfer any files to the drive do a Full restore so that the operating linux system can do what ever it needs to do to incorporate the new firmware. I just think theres a confilct.

Edit
-------------
I just wanted to update all who read this. It's now been over a week and My Cloud has not disconnected from the network Not one time.

It seems my transfer speeds are getting faster I transferred a 40gb bluray disk from my computer to my cloud at 90mb/s.
IOS devices still connect flawlessly.
Android devices still connect flawlessly.
multiple connections while streaming still runs flawless.

Week 3 I still have blazing fast transfer speeds. And not one disconnects. Absolutely perfect performance across all devices.

It's been over 1 month now and the my cloud has worked flawlessly no disconnects super fast transfers
no problems.

I really believe this is the fix for the problems people have experienced with their drives.

I found the WD MyCloud device very nice but a bit slow with file transfers, one client I sold a WD Cloud device and another client the Seagate equivalent. The Seagate one performs much better.

Personally I found that building my own and using the Synology Software as the operating platform much better. Also can add up to 12 drives (depending on the amount of SATA ports).
