In case anyone is planning on purchasing a My Cloud device, best read the WD forums before you buy it. Wish I'd done that...alas what's done is done. Hoping Takealot will allow me to return it for something else given that I've had it for just under 2 weeks. :D

Basically the issue is that this device will "disappear" off the network and the only way to get it back is to unplug the power cable, wait a bit, then plug it back in. WD seems to know about this issue since late 2013 and have been releasing firmware updates ever since, no luck.
Some guys have resorted to writing cron jobs to run every minute just to keep the device "awake".
Others have assigned static IP addresses but the non-techie me hasn't tried that yet. Some of the forum discussions and frustrated users:

Anyway, just wanted to share :)

Darn - I had a look at this device and it seems rather good for the price. What OS you generally running?

Is that sorted out yet or is it giving the same problem?

I was planning on buying it, but now I don't know.
If the problem is caused by DHCP then I can always just set it to a static address, but I would really like to know what exactly is the problem before I buy.

I have the 3TB WD My cloud and it works flawlessly. Last I had to reboot was 2 days after I bought it. Also had the issue you refer to but the issue is the sleep mode on the device. Turn of sleep when not in use and you should never have this issue again.

I've been contemplating buying it for a while now as well.

Ive heard that you have to access it via the software which could be frustrating...

Can you browse and copy/transfer files using a unc path?

Good Morning,

Yes you can access the device on several different ways! For starters you can setup the ip, users, shares on the web interface.

You enable diffrent "servers" on the interface, and then you can acces the data from the device on that way as well.
Like ftp server, ssh, dlna server, then most tv's and players can play media direct from device, itunes server, time machine for backups, and allot of others. I've played with so many linux distros and windows on a HP microserver, and ps3 media server etc, and this is such a small, low powered device (under 9watt) and it does everthing, ok nearlly everthing.

I would've like it to make it my downloading server as well, it is possible with a bit of hacking, but i believe "standaard is koning!"

It has a usb3 port for copying data quick, or sharing another 4tb hdd if the build in one is to small, if i remeber correctly, you can also print to that usb port.

Then it comes with dropbox like software, that you can access your own data from home or work like dropbox on network, or outside if you are on the road. (My Cloud)

I have one as the home media repository. Sleep mode off since new some months ago. Runs 24/7. Never had an issue. Works workout a hitch.

Will definitely considering buying it as you can browse to it via UNC and DLNA etc.

cool will remind myself that i need to turn off sleep mode :P

I will definitely be needing a router with gig ports now.

I'm also keen to buy one for my wife's small business. But I might go for the either the 4tb + buy another 4tb as backup or just buy the 2x4tb my
Cloud duo

I have in fact recommended it to a client and will likely be deploying it at their house next week once we get the stock in.
I have Cobian backup running on my PC and it backs up my documents and Pictures to the drive (its attached as a network drive in Windows). I also manually backup my music to the drive every few months.

The WD My Cloud software is crap and I prefer to access the drive through Windows. The WD MyCloud Photo app is where the drive becomes truly indespensible. Once you'v connected the drive to your phone/app then whenever you are connected to a WiFi network (home, work, coffee shop, hotel, etc) then it will upload whatever photos you've taken to your MyCloud. Ideal for people on holiday. Imagine using it with a Android powered camera... In fact this app is the reason why I suggested it to my client, they have kids and take lots of photos.

Any chance to give a fellow MyBB a good price on the 4Tb. Need one for my wife's business.

How does it function as iTunes server, I thought you needed iTunes running on a mac etc?
