WD TV Live - Unotelly setup

First of all - decided to look at other options since monochoice is not up to spec anymore. And my HTPC needed a upgrade.
I finally decided to re-task it as a media server (The NAS with RAID array will come later), and picked up a WD TV Live. Awesome device, a bit infuriating, but I think my choice of OS is to blame. I'm too lazy to uninstall Windows 8, yet.
But more importantly - UnoTelly is the best idea ever.
Netflix streams like a bomb on a 2mb line. Thing is - my better half will only accept this setup on the condition that she still has the Food Network. I have not yet tried Hulu+.
Does anyone have any other options I can use?
 
Ok. Some feedback. Netflix and UnoTelly really works. Just spent a nice hour watching Powerpuff Girls. (At least I'm not a bronie)
Hulu Plus - meh. The WD TV Live is a close second. Should have got a Roku or set my own one up - Raspberry Time!
Anyone tell me if Playon is worth it?

Yes. Quite easy. Set your router's DNS to the UnoTelly ones. Do a Factory Reset. Open up Hulu, get a referral number, Sign up from your laptop and use the referral number. Next thing my Hulu was signed in.
But very disappointing. No content I really want. Going to cancel my trial and looking at Playon instead.
Netflix is really worth it. My 6 year old quickly figured out the Kids Zone. Next thing I know she's watching She-Ra.

And - I've been tolerating Windows 8's quirks until now. But the network share and Media Player Streaming to the WD is just not working for me. I'm going back to 7 next weekend.

What probably are you having on Win8? Maybe I can help.

My setup is a Win8 dedicated quad core Xeon 3.2Ghz machine running PlayOn, Plex Server and Mezzmo. 13TB of storage with all content. Also my download server.
This machine does simultaneous streams to many devices via either of the media servers (depending on who wants what). Works flawlessly every day.

Thanks for the offer. I had a devil of a time to get the WD TV Live to see my network shares until I set my share security to 'everyone'. And the number of places you can disable/enable sharing and streaming is over the top.
Then I finally got Media Player set up as a media server. If I move a new file into my media directory - I have a 50/50 chance of it showing in the media server, or the network share. I'm thinking of trying Playon or Plex, and seeing if that is better.
As for 8 - too many unnecessary changes, not to mention the whole bit about making anything in the users folder read-only.

Have you updated your unotelly ip?
 
Hi There,

yes i have - i have tried the CT and Johannesburg DNS server with no luck. I think for some reason the media player still detects my location as SA.
 
ok, so once i have amended the DNS server on the media player, i update on unotelly with my IP address and reset the device?
 
@Icemanbrfc: You either need to use a PC browser to go to the Unotelly website, login and update your IP address, use the Unotelly app on a smart phone or set up your router to use dynDNS etc.
 
Thanks Yotch. I downloaded the app from the play store, so do I just select a specific region and say update IP address?
