WD TV Live

After some research I believe the Mede8er is a better buy, check it out.

i have the one before it.

its awesome, plays every single format i can think of, supports full HD on my panel and yeah - never given me even 1 sec of trouble. I went for the WD cause its made by WD...

next buy will be the one with network support.

+1
Both the WD and the Mede8er are great for their price.

the WD unit does it take an internal drive too or only external source drives?

I have asked the guys in the Mede8er firmware update forum:

If someone has some spare time on their hand please test if the player can play the files mentioned here: http://www.matroska.org/downloads/test_w1.html
The response:
2, 5, 7 and 8 play. 1, 3 and 6 audio only no visuals and 4 returns an invalid file message...
On the Mede8er with firmware V3.04...

Now I would like to get someone with a WD Live HD (possibly with the latest firmware of beta firmware) to test its mkv support to compare it to the Mede8er.
Thanks in advance guys.

I have the WD player and it is pretty good.

Only problem is that I can't connect via HDMI, as those players seems to have an issue, so I use the S video rather.
I returned my first one, got a new one and same problem.

It also runs very hot.

Have a look here:

Thanks alf, did you get the "live" version? Firmware support seems to be better on those.

Edit: also which gen do you have, I found this on wiki:
# WD TV (1st Gen.) - Full HD 1080p multimedia player with DTS pass-through only.
# WD TV (2nd Gen.) - Updated device with 2-channel DTS support. Uses the same Sigma SMP8655 Secure Media Processor as the Live.
# WD TV Live - Full HD 1080p resolution. An updated device with 2-channel DTS, streaming and network support, which comes in the form of an Ethernet socket on the back. Also compatible with certain wireless USB adapters.[4] Connects to internet sites: YouTube, Flickr, Live365, Pandora or stream content from a home network. Supports a wide variety of the most popular file formats. No need for transcoding. Mediafly and DVD menu support added in firmware update.
