We are full: universities

While South Africa's matric class of 2013 achieved the highest pass rate in 20 years, universities warned that applications have already exceeded capacity.

I don't understand these idiots. Walked past the local FET college yesterday and this morning and there was a long line of applicants. You're supposed to apply months in advance.

Except, at an FET college you can register today (with your deposit) and start tomorrow.

Completely different from a university.

Capacity will increase in the next few years. This year sees the first intakes at the University of Mpumalanga and Sol Plaatjies University in Kimberly.

What courses do those University's offer?

Not much on offer really:

University of Mpumalanga:
  • BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (Foundation Phase Teaching)
  • BACHELOR OF AGRICULTURE (Agricultural Extension and Rural Resource Development) B Agric (Agricultural Extension)
  • DIPLOMA IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT (Dip Hosp Man)

Sol Plaatje University:
  • DIPLOMA IN RETAIL BUSINESS MANAGEMENT
  • THE BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (B Ed) IN SENIOR PHASE & FET TEACHING
  • Diploma in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Specialised in Applications Development

Who knows. Blade Nzimande even bragged the universities will start operating before they've even been built. :erm:

They are using existing buildings and colleges for the first intake. They are still building towards being fully fledged universities. It's quite normal, UFS started out as an off shoot of Grey College, UCT and SACS used to be one institute.

i Hope we do not have a repeat of when happen over the years and even someone lost they life trying to get a place for they children.
