ANC leader Jacob Zuma, addressing 2 000 cheering supporters at the party's headquarters, has told them he could smell victory.

Statements like this piss me off. This is not democracy and it has been the failing of every "democratic" country on this continent. Plato must be rolling in his grave to realise his system of government is being so abused

A 2/3 majority undermines democracy; there is no accountability and the government does whatever it feels like doing.

I hope all of you who voted for the ANC get what you wished for! May you have an interesting 5 years.

why is this 'rule' for want of a better word even in place? It shouldn't matter if you score 100% You shouldn't be allowed to just do what you want. It makes no sense in my opinion.

I agree, its a massive flaw in many democracies. There should be some sort of additional clause that ensures the change to the constitution benefits all South Africans, not just 66%.

Exactly there should be measures in place to ensure such a powerful law is not abused.

Zuma is our saviour..free hairdryers...free education...free taxis....free farms....free washing machines..free free!!

Um, it is democracy. Democracy may not be ideal, you may not agree with it, it may not even be good for governance - but this is democracy.

That's why a two-thirds majority is required - to ensure that that constitution can only be changed when there is a sufficiently large mandate from the voters (or co-operation by a sufficient number of parties).

I didn't vote for the ANC, so you can keep that knee-jerk reaction to yourself.

What irritates me is the ANC having a huge victory party when only half the votes have been counted so far.

Yes, they'll probably win; but they may or may not get their 2/3 majority. And regardless, observe the proprieties and don't start celebrating until it's official.

rofl, a true reflection of the country indeed.
More poor now than ever before.

"This is not a celebration, but we are here to thank you for coming out in large numbers to support us," Zuma said.

I think Fikile said the ANC victory party has been planned for Friday at Nasrec, South of Johannesburg.

I don't care about them celebrating, I care about them having a pretend funeral ceremony carrying caskets for other parties. How sad that they need to act like children.

BTW Cope is the official opposition in EC with around 13%, DA at 10%

Its an expression. Like when you team does badly in football and you cry: "this isn't soccer!". Except everybody (though apparently not) knows that it is.

And no, it is a failing that has done injustice to this entire continent. It is obvious that people in this part of the world will not vote anyone out even if they abuse that majority. So no, it doesn't work in uneducated darkest Africa, and was probably best left as a European invention.

In fact, I would go so far as to say the worst thing the Europeans ever did to Africa was not colonialism, but an idea called "democracy" which the "democratically elected" leaders bent and abused and ultimately enslaved and killed more people than colonialism ever did.

Also, furthermore, in a mature democracy with candidates that are prepared to sacrifice for the people and follow the will of the people, will never revel in claiming a 70% majority as it is a bad thing for democracy.

I thought about that and had the DA attempted such a thing it would have been called racist, bigoted, slanderous and the dark creation of a "White" party!

I hope they burn a Jacob Zuma/Julius Malema effigy in Cape Town on celebration night! :D:D:D
