Anyone finding things very slow this morning? Taking me 30 seconds to load a local page such at this one. International is even worse???

Sorry, must be my torrent maxing out my 4Mbps line :) It'll be done in say 30mins? :p

Something does seem to be off. Speedtests all seem fine, but any streaming stops after a few seconds.

Does anyone else find there's 'phantom data' usage just after download plus ends. I know for a fact that my downloads end at 6AM on the dot (confirmed with PFSense Usage Graphs) yet I always have data usage from 06:00AM - 07:00AM. I didn't say anything until I saw that this morning I had the following:

06:00 - 07:00 1 434 993 492 bytes 1.33 GB

My 2MB line can only do around 720MB per hour, so there's no chance I suddenly had a 4MB line for an hour. Also, like I said, PFSense proves to me that I did not have any usage on the line at this time.

Thanks but doesn't seemed to have helped all that much :(

We have no reported network issues this morning or at this moment.

@Fulton17, our team are investigating your issue and have escalated it to our network team.

@Aessa, could you PM me your account details so I can get our guys to troubleshoot.

Hi XperiAnce,

Due to the way we receive the packet info (Hourly basis) from Telkom our DSL console will report usage for the period of 5-6am in the 6-7am slot. We have already made provisions in our systems to make sure that this usage does not affect your normal usage.

Just as well my internet is slow, I needed something of about 1GB, kicked it off - but forgot about it, and after it were about 40GB of files... it only managed 2GB since this morning :D

I second what XperiAnce said, 1.33GB throughput is not possible in 1 hour on a 2Mb line even if 100% Dowload and 100% upload is taken into account.

That's beyond even the theoretical maximum of the combined download and upload of a 2Mb line which is only 1.1GB.

As someone who has worked on RADIUS and accounting systems for an ISP before, it's entirely possible -- and it's no fault of the ISP, it's rather a consequence on how Telkom forwards the accounting information to the ISPs. Telkom doesn't send usage information to ISPs in realtime, but rather each hour. In practice though, it's not quite one hour (it's usually just under an hour), so a situation like this can easily result:

  • At 04:05, Telkom sends information to $isp that $user has done 10 GiB of usage since the previous account packet send (at, let's say, 03:05). $isp logs it in the 04:00-05:00 timeslot, based on the time that the accounting packet was received (it has no timestamp information; all $isp has to go on is the time that said packet was received).
  • At 05:03, Telkom sends information to $isp that $user has done 10 GiB since the last packet was sent (so, between 04:05 and 05:03). $isp logs it in the 05:00-06:00 timeslot.
  • At 05:58, Telkom sends information to $isp that $user has done 10 GiB since the last packet was sent (so, between 05:03 and 05:58). $isp logs it in the 05:00-06:00 timeslot, adding it to the 10 GiB logged in that timeslot earlier. This is what will cause $user to complain later.
  • At 06:55, Telkom sends information to $isp that $user has done 1 GiB since the last packet was sent (so, between 05:58 and 06:55). $isp logs it in the 06:00-07:00 timeslot. (Let's say it's only 1 GiB because $user stopped downloading at 06:00 -- still goes into the 06:00-07:00 timeslot though, but WA have previously stated that they give $user the benefit of the doubt in these cases.)
  • $user logs in later in the day, sees a massive usage spike logged between 05:00-06:00 (20 GiB, compared with 10 GiB between 04:00 and 05:00, and 1 GiB between 06:00 and 07:00), and has a hissy fit.

It's almost certainly what's happened here.

Just out of interest, does this non-timestamped, delayed, accounting also apply to TelkomInternet? In other words, if you really wanted up-to-the-second accurate accounting should you use TelkomInternet?

Strictly speaking, it should apply to TI as well, as (if I recall correctly, but I may not be!) the accounting information originates from Telkom's IPC system.

That said, it wouldn't surprise me if Telkom has a more realtime system that they use internally, and batch things up for everyone else. It would be in their uncompetitive nature, after all.

I no longer work in the ISP industry and haven't for a good long while, so some of my information may be incorrect/outdated, and some of it is educated speculation based on what I encountered when I was there, so please keep this in mind. :)

Is it just me or is the billings / account department very poorly run?

I sent an email a few days ago as they have not sent me my June invoice and want payment. It takes over two days for them to respond and then they don't send the invoice even though I quite clearly asked for it.

This really can't be good for WA

Maybe check your customer zone under your tickets to see if there is a reply. I never emails as the last time I tried that my tickets never got registered.

Try phoning them to speed up the process?

How are torrents handled on a home capped account? Would like to use xbmctorrent, Acestream and sopcast.

Torrents are not bad. In my tests usually 60 - 80% line speed during business hours - but it varies from week to week, after hours always as fast as the torrents will go - which isn't really a problem seeing that you have night data to use up for torrents ;)

Streaming, gaming, browsing etc. always perform well - day and night
