Web Africa data theft issue

While it is strange that you Line Nas Port number was changed twice in
the month I can confirm the usage does come from your line.

Coupled with 2 sessions in the afternoon where I supposedly d/loaded 1gb and then 1.5gb and I know for a fact it's all BS ..... I download before 12-1pm for the most part because I game after that time.

Hi guys

Thanks for the feedback posted so far.

This issue does seem to be rather strange and I will continue to monitor it from my side.

The results I forwarded you are all from the SAIX and IS network tools.

On the SAIX tool I searched for the user name and the the month in question.

This listed the account and all the numbers connected to it for that period.

If there is only one number listed then it means that only this number connected to the account.

The same can be said for the IS tool, I specifically requested the usage for the day in question from IS.

This listed only the numbers connecting to the account on that specific day.

I also confirmed these results by cross referencing the foreign numbers listed in the dsl console.

These are SAIX and IS applications which cannot be manipulated from our side.

Please let me know or support if you have any further queries around this.

Thank you.

You keep mentioning to let you or support know if we have any further queries even when it's clear that at least 3 of us had data go missing, not due to us using it. It's come back that "Oh no, you used it, eod" so what more should we be letting you or support know?

Guys, I think WAangelo is just trying to help and all you do is piss on his leg. Give it some time, he has mentioned that he is investigating and taking it further.
But yes, it sounds all a bit dodge to me. The bad thing is, most users wont even notice that 1-2GB is missing, so whoever is hogging the bandwith is knowing what he is doing and it all comes down to someone working for WA.

No, he's 'investigated' and came back saying it's all us using the bandwidth, end of discussion. So what further are people supposed to do when confronted with that yet they know different? There's nothing we can do except make noise and hope someone important hears it and gets to the bottom of it for real instead of blaming customers.

Thanks for your time, Angelo. My only conclusion is that someone is playing silly buggers & they're smart enough to work the system, as blogbytes says.

this situation is the stuff of nightmares i tell you :D

imagine you know you havent used the data but there's no way YOU can prove it to your isp.
and you isp reflects no other connection on you account ...scary :(

+1 :(

I had the same problem that thisgeek had with telkom a few years back. Though 32gigs was downloaded in 10 days, and they wanted me to pay! LOL :)

Its not a definite but its possible that you had your wifi on without a password needed to connect and someone ended up using it. I dont see why the WA guy would lie, if he noticed something was wrong i'm sure he admit and refund ( its not as tho 10 gigs or w.e is a lot for an ISP) but they arent gonna give u free b/w just coz u think u lost b/w.

So man the **** up. Stop threatening the guy with carte blanche and all that, its not as tho u have proof of any wrong doing.

I don't have wi-fi clever chop .... next

And like I said, I never expected the bw back, I added my voice to make them see that it's not an isolated incident ....... gawd, idiotic noobs.

Hi guys

Just a quick update with regards to this issue.

This issue is still being investigated and I have logged it with our developers to check the usage stats on the back end.

I provided them with all the details and I will update you as soon as I receive some feedback.

In the meantime, I also recommend downloading a traffic monitoring tool like NetLimiter along with activating dsl secure as added security tools.

Thank you.

I highly recommend netWorx bandwidth monitor: http://www.softperfect.com/products/networx/ its free and you can even set daily quotes(caps) etc
copy paste from the website:
With NetWorx You Can ...
Find out and monitor how fast your Internet connection is.
Find out and monitor how much Internet traffic you consume.
Verify whether your ISP charges your Internet usage fairly.
Detect a suspicious network activity on your computer.
Perform simple network tests such as ping and trace route.
Be notified about excessive Internet usage.

Hi Guys. Data theft is a common problem unfortunately and usually a slippery one to nail down precisely. That being said, we take this sort of thing very seriously and are doing our utmost to get to the bottom of it. Netlimiter / NetWorx are definitely good starting points to monitor and prevent this in future.

PS. This also might help: http://www.webafrica.co.za/kb/adsl/unexplained_adsl_traffic.html

@WA staff. I see the WA control panel is able to resolve port nums to Telkom numbers. How the hell does that work & can't you do a reverse lookup on that to see who stole the cap?

Good looking forward to the responses since this is my 3de time where I have lots of caps left and then suddenly I am capped. Lost 4 gigs one time and this time lost 1gigs and just yesterday lost 1.5gigs+-.

Hi guys

@CrzWaco - Could you please pm your client code and username so that I may add your details to the fault currently logged with our devs.

Please also try to include the date the offence occured.

Also, you may refer to waroop's reply above for additional info on unexplained usage.

I will try to post an update on this issue a bit later today.

Thank you.

unbelievable !

whats even more concerning is that the isp initially brushed this off as the client unknowingly using the data ! (see first posts)

only after more people coming forward and people refuting WA claims did they decide to investigate further

i really hope this gets sorted out and the bw restored to affected users. i see some users have already cancelled. pity that a client has to b!tch and m0an and even resort to cancelling before their suspicions (sp) are investigated properly.
