Web Africa data theft issue

Hi guys

Our devs have given me some conclusive and additional info around this issue.
I have passed on the info to the relevant parties for further reading.

Thank you.

Just lock the account to your port num, secure wireless properly. Problem solved.

Anyone gotten anything "conclusive" or "additional" yet and feel like sharing?

Hi guys

If you would allow me, I would like to take the time to shed some light on this matter.

Since this issue was initially raised, it has been taken very seriously as this is considered a very serious issue. Due to the nature of the issue, it has taken some time to collect all the relevant data. I have since passed it on to our developers to investigate and have provided them with all the logs, usernames and dates in question.

The first issue that was addressed was the matter of foreign numbers appearing in the DSL console. This matter was attributed to a bug we experienced at the time on our DSL console. It has since been logged and rectified. While these numbers were present in the DSL console, I was assured by the developers that they did not connect to the accounts or use any of the bandwidth on the accounts.

The second issue was the actual bandwidth that disappeared on the days in question. While investigating these queries I also requested the usage from the SAIX and IS network monitoring tools. I forwarded my findings to the relevant parties and then logged it with our developers who did their own investigation and came to the same conclusion I did.

Thanks.

Soooo .... basically still the "It was you, nah nah nana nah" response.

Lol, like I said, I never expected the missing bandwidth back and I appreciated the 'investigation' (which now seems like it was just lip service) but I was expecting the truth to at least come through. Oh well

Just shush and turn your none-existent wireless off.

What firewall do you run btw? A dedicated linux box or something similar?

Check the usage on saix and see if it corresponds with webafrica: http://userstats.adsl.saix.net/

Just another day in the life of an "Online Reputation Consultant".

Is the 'none existant wireless' meant to be a jibe? Coz my router is incapable of wireless more than 2 feet away ..... add to that I'm on LOCAL ONLY and I'm hack proof.

is there like an ombudsman or something that you can take this up with IF you still dispute their response ? or is it just icasa ?

no way in knowing the truth i guess unless maybe they agree to get an independant investigator to check the logs.

Unfortunately, if they are not logging traffic (ie, source, destination, ports, etc) - which is a good and bad thing - then there's nothing much further that can be done.
(Good thing in that it is not violating your privacy, bad thing in that it makes this type of thing impossible to prove/troubleshoot)

Just have to grin and bear it.

I have chosen to exercise my rights as a consumer, and have moved on to a facility where data theft is not an issue to me.

I don't have wi-fi clever chop .... next

And like I said, I never expected the bw back, I added my voice to make them see that it's not an isolated incident ....... gawd, idiotic noobs.

You went from no wifi to low range wifi?

So it seems the only one not being honest here is you, and not WA.

Oh ffs ...... to me, 2 feet of wifi (which I still don't know how is working, coz I don't even have antennae) is NO wifi. The outer perimeter of my house is about 20-30 feet in every direction, not 2 feet. Twit.

I have a wireless transmitter on a broadband router which is completely disabled so that isn't an issue for me either.

Just to add my final 2c to this whole sorry affair...

I changed to an uncapped account with (obviously) a different ISP - of which I used a total of 3.5gbs last month. A far cry from 14.5gb that suddenly went missing in one day.

I have just experienced the same problem. Have 10gig plan. For the past few months I have never reached the cap and suddenly I've used 2gig in 1.5 days.
Please someone recommend a different ISP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Your line speed?
Any "unknown" connections in your connection log?

I use 2GB's in 2 days easily, but then it's a conscious decision. I play a good 4-6 hours of Bad Company 2.0 & a fair amount of browsing & only use +/- 600MB of data a day. Seems like there's a few Ninja connections happening out there.

Make sure you have DSL Secure enabled, install Networx for better reporting on your daily usage, and perhaps SysInternals, with a view to using TCPIPView to checking your connections. If you're using Windows 7, Resource Monitor gives you a nice idea of what applications are connected to the Internet: Ctrl/Alt/Del > Start Task Manager > Performance > Resource Monitor > Network

It could be a dodgy program, it could be a hacker, who knows? Those things will help you anyway.

As for ISP, if you're like me & you're not particularly worried about DL'ing stacks of torrents, which I'm assuming you are given the capacity of your BW, WA is the best in terms of performance, without a doubt - the one, and only, reason I haven't switched yet!

Well at this rate I won't have any BW left to do any downloads. I would prefer not to move from WA, but if this carries on I will have to think about it. Logged in again and can now not access my usage log at all!!! Makes you wonder!
