Web Africa reduces uncapped ADSL prices

Interesting, would be interested in hearing from current 10Mb users on WA what their experience is like and how much data they use on a monthly basis.

I use around 150-200GB per month and Afrihost/MTN is starting to really f'ing annoy me with their shaping of downloads to 30kB/s for 16+ hours a day

My experience exactly and that is why I moved from Afrihost to Openweb. Openweb does shape during the day but after hours and over weekends their downloads fly so at least you get to download something. I think Web Africa, being Afrihost's sister company, will not be any different so I will pass this one.

You're thinking of Axxess?

Webafrica has had many ups and downs, but currently is pretty decent as long as you stay within their star system (only download after hours). If you manage that it's a decent service worth it for the price.

However I generally stay on 5 stars by only doing about 100-150gb a month on 10mb - so if you want to download 150gb+ a month rather look at other ISPs.

I was with them for a few months and had no issues with them, swapped to Axxess now to save a few bucks but never had issues. as has been said just play within their rules i.e. most downloading 12-6. I run netflix a lot and never had issues. I usually sit on 2-3 stars but didn't really notice any difference.

PS: I don't game; so can't speak for that.

Hi cozinsky,

We no way related to Afrihost which is a great thing :)

Downloads are shaped during the day on all Home Uncapped accounts and will run at full tilt after hours, dependent on your rating.
 
We really need some kind of shaping comparison between Mweb, Telkom, Afrihost and WebAfrica (and whoever else). Point being, it is frustrating to use an uncapped option from an ISP only to find out that you are shaped to death any time from 5pm to 12pm with moderate usage. So only when I'm at home does my internet suck, yay.

Has this been done before?

Please help me understand something. I am on the WA 1Mbps uncapped package, currently paying R179. AFAIK, Telkom will be upgrading this automatically sometime soon to a 2Mbps line, correct? So I then have to pay R20 more - through no upgrade choice of my own (as nice as that may be)?

What am I missing?

You have the choice of sticking to a 1MB Webafrica account. Your speed will then be limited by your isp, not your fixed line provider. Then everything will be the same. I would spend the R 20 to get double speed, though.

Hi Mask,

You are correctly you will need to upgrade your data package to a 2mbs service to get the speeds. The line is upgraded free as per the Telkom roll-out but not the data.
 
Pity the capped accounts are so expensive. :( Will take a 30gb at R150 anyday , currently paying R129 for that at Afritoast which performs very well I have to add, but from my location, IS seem to be better....

Soooooooooo WebAfrica make a plan for us capped users :)

side note: I still remember in 2005 the 30gb for R199 .. hehe that was fun those days, but we only had 512 max speed
