web-based weather system???

Hi agin guys,

Well i seem to always come up with the strangest ideas which google is almost unable to help with ( well as far as my search words go ).

Anyways what I want to know is if anyone knows of a web-based weather program/system/all-in-one thing that can be installed on a local machine to run on a local network.

It should be able to read the info from the inet and then store the data in a db. Obviously it must support SA. Even if the program requires purchasing, i don't really mind.

To give you a graphical look of what im expecting to do, yet not as extreme, is on www.weathersa.co.za or even www.windfinder.com

Why not just subscribe to some RSS feeds and you can even build your own aggregator to interpret the feeds. You can then make it as graphical or plain as you want...

Accuweather.com (which forecast fox firefox extension and many other apps use) has a webservice that you can send calls to retrieve data from. I think they have a free account.

Or you could cheat with RSS feeds, below is an example

Ive looked into the rss feed part but there are a few problems:

1. I don't know exactly how to manipulate the data to make it look like an actual weather site.

2. The data is only of forecasts, and not ir maps etc.

Like i said, looking for an actual full scale site similar to the links i gave.

And like I said, accuweather has a webservice where you can get that information from.

To manipulate rss is pretty simple, but a waist of time if it doesnt have all the information you require

I think acidrain doesn't want to DEVELOP the site, so just pointing him to RSS and WebService solutions won't fit the bill...

@Acidrain: You'll have to develop a site for the functionality you need. I don't think I've ever heard of an open-source weather system though. Most information sources pride themselves in their information and feature "exclusivity" to gain some market-share, so you're not likely to find some free web application floating around to emulate the popular weather sites.

Why not just use a Weather Service?

Add it to your web project / c# application as a web service, and set intervals when to get the data, save it in DB as timestamp, and report on it...

Again, I don't think acidrain is looking to develop said "weather system". It looks like he wants a pre-built system to just deploy on an intranet. So RSS feeds and WebServices won't fit the bill.
