Web Design Feedback and Critique

Links

I use a wide screen, and the link "FBI Blog" actually wrapped, so the "blog" part was directly below "Horse Syndication" making it look like "Horse Syndication Blog" - however, as you move your mouse over it you can see the link changes in the status bar. Many people might not pick this up and might accidentally go to the wrong site.

Also, the scrolling news text made my FF browser response extremely slow. This might be a browser specific problem

Other then that I like the simplicity of the site. Suggestions I might want to through in:

  • See if you can not find a nice theme at http://oswd.org/
  • Consider using something like jQuery to handle common JavaScript elements, like scrolling text. jQuery takes care of any funny browser stuff and is really easy and light weight.
  • Perhaps see if you can integrate Google search somewhere

That's it from me so far. Of course I am not a web designer - just a user so this is my "user" perspective :)

Thak you for your input Nic and it is just as welcome to have input from end-users as well as opposed to from just designers as it is you who eventually decide how successful the site is going to be ;)

Please could you give me your honest opinion and critique on the below layout and design of the following page with specific reference to functionality and aesthetic.

http://www.anresco.org/start_page.htm

It's seriously... um, ugly.

First, you need to acquaint yourself with this site , www.colourlovers.com, choose a palette and learn to love it. Be one with your palette!

Seconds, tables are for supper, not for page layouts. Learn some CSS , then pick stylesheet from here http://www.freecsstemplates.org/, better yet, just pick a stylesheet and go with the flow.

Thirdly, If you're planning on adding content quite often consider hosting it on a CMS system like Drupla or Joomla

Seriously, if it weren't for the cute little puppy......

The structure is all over the place.

I've got a feeling some sort of CMS might be what you're looking for. Get Joomla, pick up a free theme and just concentrate on content.

Thanks for the resource sites. They will most certainly come in useful :)
It looks like the developer will be utilizing WordPress for future site developments going forward as this is used by us for the blogs etc and makes sense to keep it consistent.

The site is meant to be kept simple so as not to detract from the actual message, but do agree that frames is outdated and need to be removed.

Bwana, could you exapnd a bit on the structure being all over the place?

Cute puppies are always a nice touch ;), but there is sense of seriousness in that all animals featured have been abused or mistreated in some manner or form.

As a normal internet user, I can say that I am totally put off by that site. It is not neat and at first glances looks like a site that is very old and outdated. It is confusing as there is no info apart from the title. It definitely needs structure as it just looks like random links all over tha place. Colour would be nice, and it definitely needs a logo.

I think it needs to be totally redesigned. (no offence intended.)

What is wrong with the current logo?

I am in agreement with you in terms of majority of the statements made, but we do want to keep it simple. But simple is pointless when even with that it is not clear what the site is about.

No offence taken. Honesty is what I asked for ;)

It doesn't look like a logo to me, it's just writing that has different colour pronunciations.

At the moment it looks cluttered rather than simple.

Joomla is too confusing for me. :(

I guess I need to stick with it and read a few more tutorials.

Is your site made with Joomla?

Linky I forgot?

You can learn joomla in one day pooky. You just have to go through their ultimate beginners guide(it's a wikipedia page)

Yes my site is designed with joomla. I think even a very basic joomla site would look much better than his current site. Like bwana said there's no structure.

If your not too concerned with becoming a great web developer then I think joomla is the way to go.

I will definitely go through that thanks.

I think my main problem is not having a topic to make a site about.

To the top left is the horses head. That is the logo.

Agreed. There is more that can be done to 'clean' the site up.

First of all, never make your logo the background of the page. Choose a simple color scheme and stick to a simple background. Put the logo in the top left corner of the page.
