Say I wanted to host a blog-type website that is continuously going to receive content updates. Let's say like a tech news site, as an example, how does my disk space affect this? If I were to get web hosting, would I be fine on an option that grants about 1gb disk space or am I going to reach a point where the content on the site uses up all the disk space?

I'm a total noob at this, so I have no idea how the whole thing works.

With text posts and well optimised images you could do several hundred pages on a 1 gig account, before needing to upgrade.
Most hosts will allow you to do an upgrade of resources and your site will continue as normal without you having to change anything.
Also check what bandwidth limits you get as that varies widely amongst the different hosts on both price and terms.
Many also offer unlimited bandwidth, just be sure to read and understand their conditions for the Unlimited resources then you should be ok.

My experience with these types of sites is that disk space can be worried about later on. CPU and memory usage, and specifically Input/Ouput is of concern.

I just now checked a news aggregation type of site, just over 8000 entries, and the database size is under 40 megabytes. The pictures are total of a few megabytes, the feeds send small images.

The shared hosts that I used in the past, had an I/O limit of 1MB/s. That's too little for a site receiving content updates frequently. Once the limit of 1MB/s was hit, the account was throttled down to 512KB/s, and then things get worse and worse...

Thanks for all the advice, everyone. The Afrihost 2gb basic Linux hosting for R40 doesn't seem to be too bad.

I'll see about getting web hosting from January then, when I've got a bit more time to tinker with it and start looking at designing a website for myself, which I hope isn't too difficult. I'll probably set up a WordPress site, though, so I should have a decent amount of tutorials on the internet to help.

2GB is more than it might appear if you're sticking with regular images and plain text :)
If you're hard pressed for space, you can host your images on imgur or Dropbox or the likes :p
