When I went out searching for ADSL ISP, I based my decision largely on public opinion, namely the list of best ISP's as compiled by MyBroadband every year. According to that list, the three best ISP's are: Vox Telecom, Web Africa and Afrihost. I picked Web Africa, but to be very honest, I have no idea how they ended up in the number two spot!

I must give them credit for their support, which is the best in the industry. Other ISP's can learn from them.

Their packages and their way of doing business is however where I have my greatest concern.

Previously I had an 4Mb uncapped account with another ISP. We all know that uncapped in SA is not really uncapped and I had a 180Gb AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). I applied for a 10Mb package through Web Africa, assuming that the AUP for a 10Mb account would be 300-400Gb. I suppose it is true that assumption is the mother of all f#$kups!

I have four PC's, a laptop, three tablets and several phones that has not been updated in more than a month due to my move to Pretoria. When the connection was made, these systems immediately started to update. Needless to say, I went through 100Gb in a week! That is when I discovered my Internet connection slowing down. At first I thought it was a Telkom problem, but when I phoned WebAfrica I was told that I have used an eccesive amount of data. True, but uncapped generally means a high AUP, I said. No, it does not work that way. They throttle their uncapped accounts based on your daily usage! :erm:

With all the ISP's I have been in the past, you paid for your acceptable use data up to the cutoff point. Then they severely throttle you, which is what I have always considered fair. WebAfrica however does not work that way. You are being throttled from day one, depending on your use! I am all for the fact that IPS's have to protect their systems from abuse and I have no problem with that, but this is a bit excessive! If you cannot handle the data usage as an ISP, then GET OUT OF THE BUSINESS!

I was advised to switch to a capped account which is never throttled and I almost did, until I saw this: on all their capped accounts, business ones as well, you get one third your data for use between 06h00 and 24h00. The remaining two thirds data is kept in reserve for use between 24h00 and 06h00! WTF??!!? :wtf:

I work from home. I am NOT, I REPEAT: NOT going to get up at 24h00 at night to work and use the two thirds of my data! :erm:

Needless to say, If you are one of those people that says up all night, howling at the moon, then Web Africa may be the ISP for you. For us normal day people that slave away under the sun, WebAfrica is a very bad choice!

I am now back with Afrihost. They may not be perfect, but the price is good and I can use my data ANYTIME!

If you're using the internet for work purposes you need a business account. The home accounts are designed for people that are at work during the day and only get home at 17:00-18:00.

Here's a link to the Business accounts:

I spoke to WebAfrica about those. With business accounts, you get no shaping between 06h00-17h00, but after 17h00 your accounts gets severely shapped and it will be much slower. Home accounts gets shaped between 06h00-17h00, but after that, the world is yours, wish is fair, but that was not my concern.

WebAfrica uncapped accounts are all about your daily download limit. It seems that they have some sort of algorithm that looks at the amount of data you download daily and based on that, they throttle your account, regardless if you have a business or a home uncapped account. I was expecting something like a Fair Use policy with a set amount of data like all the other ISP's. When you reach the FUP, then they throttle you, but this is not how WebAfrica works. If your daily usage is too high as per their definition and you WILL get hammered!

i got a business account and i work on it mostly at after 6pm
and it never gets slower,it just works

Hi User217,

Really sad to hear that you are not happy with the Home uncapped account and that you have already left us

The Home uncapped service will require more management from a customers side as you need to schedule big and/or all downloads for the Download Plus period (12-6am daily) to ensure that you do not find yourself in the 'deprioritsed' stars. Like 'Chevron' stated the Home accounts are designed for use mostly during 'after-hours' and reading your post you would have definitely needed a Business uncapped account as it has a much higher thresholds and do not use the star rating.

I am not sure who advised you that you will get shaped after 5pm on our Business uncapped accounts but they are definitely incorrect and in fact the Business uncapped accounts will perform better than a Home uncapped anytime during the day as it is on a higher bandwidth priority. The Business accounts is a premium service aimed at Businesses and individuals who require very little shaping and a higher priority on our network.

Sure, 100Gb on updates... Yea...

You don't have to get up. You can program a device to automatically start your "updates" at 00:00 and stop them at 06:00.

It's easy to leave your PC on overnight to schedule updates, but of course it uses electricity while idling. You'd think in a country with an alarming electricity crisis, companies would encourage people to switch their computers off overnight. Web-Africa was going to be my next stop, but I think I'll skip.

bwahahahaha, good luck with that.

I signed up for the 600GB Business Capped account in December, because I have a business, so why is two-thirds of my data only available between midnight and 6am?

It's false advertising to be calling it a 600GB package if restrictions are placed on when two-thirds of the data can be used :/

Why not call it a 200GB Business Capped package with a 400GB midnight surfer addon... OR how about just giving me around 300-350GB anytime data without the addon, but for the same price? I'd much rather have that to be honest.

well its states clearly
"600 GB
200GB anytime + 400GB from midnight – 6am"

they name it 600gb cuz u get 600gb of data

I would have gone for Web Africa had it not been for that data breakdown.
I want to decide when to use the data.

I use on average 150GB a month either during the day or at night.
This means I need to buy a 600Gb Webafrica account.
That's just silly really considering I won't use 450gb of it.

Some people can't read :)

You two smart arses clearly didn't get the gist of what I'm talking about, so I'll say it again: Don't call it a 600GB Business account if I can only use 200GB in business hours.

Some business might intentionally schedule some of their data to run afterhours...

Well most probably don't, so the extra 400GB is useless. I'd rather have more anytime data thanks.

It was the best non-mweb / afrihost / openweb /axxess option that I could find and it has performed very well, I'm just pointing out that as a BUSINESS product, it should cater to BUSINESS needs, not after hours downloader's needs. It's aimed at the wrong market.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the thread title does say "feedback"
