When I went out searching for ADSL ISP, I based my decision largely on public opinion, namely the list of best ISP's as compiled by MyBroadband every year. According to that list, the three best ISP's are: Vox Telecom, Web Africa and Afrihost. I picked Web Africa, but to be very honest, I have no idea how they ended up in the number two spot!
I must give them credit for their support, which is the best in the industry. Other ISP's can learn from them.
Their packages and their way of doing business is however where I have my greatest concern.
Previously I had an 4Mb uncapped account with another ISP. We all know that uncapped in SA is not really uncapped and I had a 180Gb AUP (Acceptable Use Policy). I applied for a 10Mb package through Web Africa, assuming that the AUP for a 10Mb account would be 300-400Gb. I suppose it is true that assumption is the mother of all f#$kups!
I have four PC's, a laptop, three tablets and several phones that has not been updated in more than a month due to my move to Pretoria. When the connection was made, these systems immediately started to update. Needless to say, I went through 100Gb in a week! That is when I discovered my Internet connection slowing down. At first I thought it was a Telkom problem, but when I phoned WebAfrica I was told that I have used an eccesive amount of data. True, but uncapped generally means a high AUP, I said. No, it does not work that way. They throttle their uncapped accounts based on your daily usage! :erm:
With all the ISP's I have been in the past, you paid for your acceptable use data up to the cutoff point. Then they severely throttle you, which is what I have always considered fair. WebAfrica however does not work that way. You are being throttled from day one, depending on your use! I am all for the fact that IPS's have to protect their systems from abuse and I have no problem with that, but this is a bit excessive! If you cannot handle the data usage as an ISP, then GET OUT OF THE BUSINESS!
I was advised to switch to a capped account which is never throttled and I almost did, until I saw this: on all their capped accounts, business ones as well, you get one third your data for use between 06h00 and 24h00. The remaining two thirds data is kept in reserve for use between 24h00 and 06h00! WTF??!!? :wtf:
I work from home. I am NOT, I REPEAT: NOT going to get up at 24h00 at night to work and use the two thirds of my data! :erm:
Needless to say, If you are one of those people that says up all night, howling at the moon, then Web Africa may be the ISP for you. For us normal day people that slave away under the sun, WebAfrica is a very bad choice!
I am now back with Afrihost. They may not be perfect, but the price is good and I can use my data ANYTIME!
