fail for them....

then again i haven't used webmail for years because it was just rubbish compared to everything else...

While the reasons behind this decision are not clear, it may be related to the high bandwidth costs associated with hosting services in South Africa. In South Africa data costs of between 5c and 10c per MB for high end hosting services are commonplace – multiple times higher than international hosting services.

Proudly brought to you by Telkom's high bandwidth costs...

I use my Telkom Email account if I need to use email for the times I dont have International bandwidth.. Otherwise, I use GMail.

with all the adverts on webmail the screen is so small i can only type in lowercase.

well, not to worry
It looks like Google are setting up a datacentre of some kind in SA, so hopefully Gmail will soon be "local only" anyhow

I hope they realize that this move will end up costing them their only lifeline. Most of their consumers will now switch over to gmail instead.

Stupidest move ever! Why would I want to use webmail now when I could use Gmail or something instead? The latter has far less size restrictions etc.

Failmail.

Economics

Whilst the move is sure to alienate some users, before criticizing Webmail lets assume that they did a couple of calculations. Maybe the average bandwidth used by customers, the cost of the bandwidth and with a bit of thought realised they were better off, off shore. You can't please everyone

Wow, the ANC is culling jobs in this country at a rate of knots. I wonder if the jobless and destitute masses know what prosperity these data centres may have brought this country. But once again greed and incompetence overwhelm.

While I like to support South Africa, Webmail is not really innovative. And nothing has changed much in years, technology wise, business model wise (****ty advertising). They had a good first mover advantage locally (I think) but their market share will only erode after time. Other E-mail providers are innovating left right and center, adding AJAX interface, ability to use it offline (limited). While Webmail has not done much. Standing still is the fastest was of moving back in the industry.

I agree, why would you use webmail with a lot of better options out there? Well, you may have used it many years ago during the initial hype, or the advantage of local bandwidth. The impression I get over the past year though, is people are using international bandwidth more and more, and not worrying too much about local only access. Webmail would have to be REALLY stupid to miss the local advantage issue, and I guess they don't expect a major exodus over this, or they have something up their sleeve. Maybe they are planning new things, and want to use the money they will save on other stuff, who knows, but I would not be surprised we will find out that are not too overly concerned about the local issue.
