Website hosting: Local or international?

The internet is one logical place

Geographical location is not relevant: the internet is one logical place.

Basing long term strategic decisions on short term tactical issues is not smart. The bandwidth problems we have in South Africa are not fundamental to the internet or TCP/IP...it was created/allowed by bad government policies.

New supply of bandwidth and the right to self-provision will change the artificial bandwidth famine.

South Africans should position their internet assets where it makes the most sense for them in terms of performance, customer service, reliability and security. Not by counting network hops and tracing geo locations in a constantly evolving global network.

@Walo, have you noticed how responsive MyBroadband is?
Hosting in South Africa definitely makes a difference to the South Africans.
If I wait more than 15 seconds for a casual-browse web page, I close it.

Well you can find some pretty awesome local hosting if you look for it(R120 pm, 50GB transfer limit) ;) much better than the webafrica and imaginet crap you see everywhere.

Wow the writer did huge amounts of homework to show an entire 2 companies that do local hosting. (NOT)

Come on MyBroadband, if you are going to allow writer to put up articles please make sure that they make a fair representation of the industry.

for R27/month: unlimted MySQL dB's+ 1G space + 12.5G traffic + unlimted POP/SMTP emails and much, much more.

How much is the MyAdsl/MyBroadband hosting costing locally for what amount of traffic?

Not to target any specific local company, but analyzing that result will give a good indication of why people opt for an international option.

By hosting this site locally though, the owners are doing all the users a huge favor when you consider our pathetic access in SA, and Hetzner has been pretty much bulletproof wrt this sites uptime.
Nothing wrong with service or expertise, just the cost that we all have to fork out to Telskum for bandwidth.

Be careful of hosting providers offering unlimited bandwidth...usually their server's will crash way before you reach peak traffic, if for instance your site appeared on digg.com or reddit or somewhere similar.

They offer unlimited bandwidth as they know you won't exceed a couple gigs per month, as the server won't manage...especially on a shared server...

I have a couple of sites averageing around 30 Gigs per month, and you really need to do your homework, before deciding on a host for such a busy site.

Does Hetzner currently have any real competition for local hosting in the Managed Dedicated (reseller) server hosting-packages range?

I've not managed to find any...

I wish they would start to reduce to cost of data, or increase the included Gigs for local servers.

GoDaddy, cheap for start-ups, great scalability. Oh and they do answer the phone 24/7

maybe their pricing has something to do with the ridiculous prices charged by Telkom?

who offers that? someone reselling overseas hosting;)

I'll be watching this thread with interest as I'm going to need a domain soon.
But really more of a blog, per say.
Nothing really intense.
Some pics here and there.
But if there is room for discussion - I'd rather have a forum discussion here on the issues.

With respect to the starter Hertner offer the author says, "The package, however, does not include a relational database or PHP access, so the sites run off the package are mostly limited to static HTML sites with occasional Javascript for limited interactivity."

Now I correct me if I am wrong but for most CMS systems in use today, the bare minimum you need is PHP and MySQL. So while I am proudly South African I am afraid when it comes to hosting I use Hostmonster.

You are wrong, and a spammer. The least you could do if you wanted to add value to this thread was indicate the price of your local bandwidth hosting.

Gee an opinion is now spam. Let me rephrase, I would not be able to use the low end Hetzner offer because I tend to use Drupal, Joomla or one of the other content management systems to create my sites. They all require PHP and MySQL. Thats my choice and opinion, you are not obliged to agree.

Spill the beans.

19c per MB is disgusting, Hetzner.

I thought Afrihost, who I use, was bad at 9c per MB.

That's actually a very valid point, there really aren't many south african providers geared towards CMS integration. PHP access is pretty common but MySql is still deemed a value added service with most local hosting providers, which makes the price way out of the range of the average guy who wants to set up a wordpress blog and get on the net. If you look at international providers however a lot of the time their entry level packages come with wordpress already installed. Huge gap in the local market imho!
