Hi

I have just about completed my website, and was trying to upload it to a "Free Web Host" just to check whether everything is working correctly before putting everything on the "paid" host.

I designed the site using CoffeeCup Visual Site Designer, which gives me the option to "publish to FTP" Where i entered all the FTP details etc. I know those details are correct as I got it right ONCE to publish everything to the web, thereafter, i removed everything and wanted to REPUBLISH as i made a lot of changes

Visual Site designer keeps telling me a firewall could be blocking the connection, but I disabled Windows Firewall as well as E-Scan firewall, and still uploads for about an hour, then stops.

I have previewed the site and it is HALF published, some pages show and some dont.

What could be causing this problem?

Thank you

I would say if you can publish it on your desktop use file zilla and check what happens

How big is the site it total ?

Hi

Thank you for the reply. I dont have it with me at the moment, but its definately between 20 mb and 60 mb.
Not sure if it helps, but i can pm you the link to where "parts" of it are currently being hosted online?

In the meantime, I will look up filezilla and see what its all about.....

It can be a timeout as well on your ftp process, what is your line speed that you are using to ftp ? As I know you can configure File Zilla to passive so it wont time out

I'm assuming-hoping that the website is a gallery etc of some sort. I can provide you some space this evening to upload if you want?

Possible, as line speed is only 384kbps. The program I use gives me the option for "passive mode" which is selected...but maybe File Zilla will do a better job...

Thank you , but it is not a gallery, it is a "Company Website" offering various services

Thank you anyway :-) :-)

Can we review the website before you publish?
Typically a website is anywhere from 100KB to a couple MB's (flash etc) excluding images etc.

A normal 5 Page website is about 3 - 10 Mb shouldn't be more

I included the images, etc

Once I get it right to upload to free server temporarily, I can post the link (via pm) and you can review it if you dont mind. in the meantime I will confirm the size of the site itself... Thank you

I would greatly appreciate any help at this stage :-) Thank you. Will pm the link once complete. The free hosing site I uploaded to yesterday only shows about 4 out of 6 of my pages, so don't think thats useful. Once I get it right on FileZilla will pm new link :-) Thank you

6 pages for 20 to 60 MB???? WTF? That's huge.

ok. Sorry, the size that reflects on the hosting site under "my files" is :

Directories: 5
Files: 14 / 174.61 kB
Symlinks: 0

Does this help?

Would never ever publish a "company website" with some funny "Free Web Host"... Y dont you test your website on your local machine? Xampp will be very helpful for that....!

Regards,
hilrap

Thank you for the info. But Why is it bad to use Free Web Host for testing? :-)

..because you wouldn't want to give away your intellectual property just like that. Also you're often restricted on filesize or other features that might hamper full functionallity of your website!

There's nothing wrong with testing your site on a free hosting site.

Seriously, millions of people use these sites, it would be like winning the LOTTO if they decide to browse your files.

And obviously, don't add credit card details onto your site, there is something like hacking, and trust me there are people with nothing to do that try hacking sites all day long.

If it's a site that simply gives information about a business and it's products, then theirs no difference between a newspaper ad and a free hosting site.

One thing that I should advise on is that, these WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get ) site builders aren't very SEO friendly and nor are they search engine friendly.

oh ok. I have removed files from the free hosting service just in case :-) Thanks for the advice
will download Xampp at home and see how that goes. Do you also just upload your files to it and then it provides you with a link / preview of your website ?

The main things I need to check are the flash image viewers, as well as the contact form? Will the contact form work in Xampp?

Also, I want to see whether my site is going to take long to open. i've heard (not sure how true it is) that "Black" background sites take longer to display?
