Weight Loss Thread 2014

Eat when you are hungry - if you are hungry often then you are not eating enough fat.

Had pork belly for supper last night. Was only hungry at 12pm today when I had more pork belly with egg mayo and cheese. Just had supper (moral: skipped breakfast and nothing eaten this pm).

For me, sweetener in coffee and diet soda gives me sugar cravings. I only drink water or sugarless rooibos now so that I am not tempted to cheat with a chocolate or sweet.

Your meringue looks safe for low-carb, but like I said, watch out for creating future cravings

Hmm ok thank you!! Ok, then I think I am doing it right, I am basically eating once a day, not really that hungry after a meal lol! I gave up diet soda, havent had in a week, and also drink sugarless rooibos. My coffee I take 1tsp xylitol in. It is just a little snack that I want to have every so now and again. So, are these meringues safe to eat? Lol :D

1) How much exercise do I need to do per week to lose 5kg a month? (currently sitting at about 95kg)
2) How long does it take for your body to adjust to using fat for fuel and are there any side effects I should expect?
3) How much can I expect to lose if I do no exercise but follow the diet 100% without cheating?

Thanks for the assistance!

Like everyone else I can only offer my experiences.
1) You dont need to exercise, I generally only run the parkrun on a Sat and do little else atm.
2) This is normally around 2 weeks, sometimes a little longer. I hit a big grumpy patch and experienced some headaches.
When I went out of ketosis for a while I experienced the grumps again getting back into it.
3) This varies greatly, I lost 7kg's in the first week. After that it slowed down a lot. At a stage you might stop losing weight but you generally keep losing fat. Its one of those things that will eventually bottom out when you get to your correct weight, its not a diet in the conventional sense - more like a shift in what you eat long term.

And what about triglyceride levels?

Where can I start reading on the best LCHF approach without reading the entire thread?

http://eatingacademy.com :p
If you have a question then he has the answer which is laid out with scientific facts.
In terms of approach to LCHF most of us found the book "The real meal revolution" to be great, it covers all of the basics and some simple theory behind it. Its mostly a cookbook written by South Africans so everything is available locally.

You sound like you are doing well, keep going!
Most people found that they were very comfortable skipping a meal or two as fat keeps you feeling full for longer.
The meringues should be fine, just dont eat too many because those kinds of things tend to make you crave sugar later.

Had to go to a business cocktail party this evening. Managed to stick to soda water. From the food platters I scooped up cocktail sausages, meatballs, blue cheese and chicken sosaties. Viva la low carb :-)

66 is still better than the 78 I once was :p

But I'll fix things....

I must say I don't really crave choccie and the butter coffee keeps me full much longer than coconut coffee :)

Well done, the power less within you

I deserve a medal for drinking butter and eating a million pieces of bacon for breakfast and picking chicken off the bone.

Oh better than a medal I deserve a chocolate cake

Yes you do! My wife has never managed the fat on meat or biltong but after trying things slowly, she now smashes a bulletproof coffee and loves fatty biltong :)

Didn't someone say that the protein levels in biltong are quite high? The ketogenic diet is a medium protein one, so I'd monitor that. Too much protein and you could exit ketosis.

Not worried when the biltong sticks I choose to have sliced display over 50% fat in them - that gives them a fat ratio of close to 75%.

Yup, if it's that fatty it's all good. You just have to avoid getting in to the habit of snacking. I find myself eating biltong just cause it's so good!

I am in a predicament.
Really skinny,
Stomach has small layer of fat, like if I bend over I can see it, and I can't see a 6 pack.
If I eat less, I will be super skinny
If I eat more I will gain weight and my stomach will get fatter
How can I gain weight to make me less skinny but not have stomach fat

I agree. I love biltong and it can become an unnecessary source of energy if snacked on. I am now on 2 meals a day (brunch between 11 and 12 and then supper at 6pm) and use the fatty biltong as my meat for lunch at work - much easier than preparing food in the kitchen. I just have to pour some on a plate and chow.
