Weight Loss Thread 2014

Just poking questions about rice. There are millions of people in Asia that use as their staple YET they are slim and trim.
Is this maybe a secretly good carb? Maybe something to do with volume versus density?

the great rice question

typically Asian rice is a lot less refined than the rice we eat, and there's also a lot less sugar in the Oriental diet compared to the Western diet although this is changing, also whilst Asians may not necessarily have the obesity problems we have in the west they do have a much higher incidence of diabetes which may be reflective of huge carb consumption through rice (I haven't researched this enough though to have any conclusive evidence, just a hunch of mine).

I have a couple of questions which I have been mulling over for a while.

Nutritionally, is butter that much different from cream? Basically it's just cream that has been churned isn't it?

People tell me honey is healthy, but surely it's just a ton of sugar? Or it the sugar in honey better than cane sugar?

honey is loaded with fructose, the fructose transport mechanism in the body is very different to the sucrose/glucose mechanism and fructose is processed in the liver and generally converts to fat easier (hence the need to avoid high intake of fruit as well).

Honey however does have other potential benefits, so as always moderation is key

In the last two weeks I've decided to cut back on my sugar intake. I normally drink 1 to 2 cans of coke a day (depending on how well I've slept), as well as a reasonable amount of sugar in my oats (plus whatever sneaks through in my other food).

I decided to change my breakfast to fruit (until I can find an alternative to processed sugar in my breakfast) and I've cut my coke consumption from 1-2 a day to 1 can every second day. In order to trick my brain/body into thinking it's getting its daily fizzy drink requirements I have purchased slightly flavoured sparkling water (I can't remember the name offhand). In 350mls of this sparkling water there is about 9 grams of sugar, compared to about 38 grams of sugar in a can of coke.

I wasn't exactly fat before, but I was getting a bit of a belly and I was quite surprised to see my weight drop from 65.5 to about 63kgs (I'm about 5"7/1.5m), with a very noticeable reduction around my belly over the last two weeks.

ugh, sugar, sugar, sugar...

cutting down is great but you really want to cut it out of your diet altogether, if you want sparkling water get the Woolies low cal, sparkling, they're probably the best substitute for a flavour fizzy drink but also just try normal sparkling water, even soda water helps trick the body with the fizziness but without the sugar

My body got used to the xylitol pretty quick and easy, although there is one brand that can still send me running so I avoid it. Have avoided gaining any weight but I'm sure it would drop quicker if I avoided my 'relax Sundays'.

Otherwise I'm pretty happy.

Ok makes sense, I am pretty sure most of my stuff is grain fed... Will have to get through it all and than try and source all grass fed stuff, will this make a huge impact on my weight loss?

I wouldn't say a huge impact on shedding fat (which is what you want to achieve - this is a psychological trick, think of shedding fat as opposed to losing weight), however grass-fed is an all round healthier option

When does the constant hunger stop :( ate at 6am and hungry again...

what did you have for breakfast? you need to eat enough fats and protein to trigger a leptin response, this will make you feel satiated, fructose (fruit) or carbs (cereal) for breakfast will not give you a leptin response

I use the Natures Choice xylitol

@ the breakfast not filling you up - it might be that what you had was not enough ..... you gotta eat until you're full ;)

Had Bacon, 2 fried eggs, fried tomato and cup of coffee.

good, keep at it, try some full fat coffee if you're brave enough :p

you may have some leptin resistance based on previous eating habits, keep at it

Awesome will have a look to see if I can find natures choice and will give it a bash :)

Haha I could probably eat a lot more eggs and bacon, don't want to over do it :p

I usually have about 4 or 5 eggs when I have some bacon ..... add half an avo to it and man, it's a nommy chow and filling too

Eating too many eggs (ie. protein) is not okay for lchf. An excess of protein is anti-ketogenic. When there is too much protein in the body it is converted to glucose in the liver and kidneys... Gluconeogenesis

If anyone knows where I can get Ketone strips please let me know.
