Weight Loss Thread 2014

Thanks. Couldn't get the stone out. Feeling better now but have a stent in that niggles a bit. Have to return to theatre to try removing stone.

The problem is with high fat you need proteins to go with it. They say restrict meat to 3-5 times per week but that's where my fat comes from!

You could restrict your protein and eat more fat. Most people eat too much protein anyway. You can get some animal fats from http://www.melfort.co.za/ and ghee from http://www.earthproducts.co.za/ghee-230g/

This thread is unusually quiet, hope y'all aren't cheating over the long weekend :p

So I was admitted to the emergency room last night with a suspected heart attack.

Turns out after all the blood tests, ECG and monitoring that I have a viral infection that affects the heart muscles. It gave me all the symptoms of a light heart attack.

On the plus side the doctors are extremely happy with my blood sugar, cholesterol levels and other vital signs (except for the infection bumping up my BP and HR a bit of course).

I have strict orders not to exercise for 2 weeks and a bag full of meds to clear up the infection.

I've had pericarditis twice, which is an infection of the membrane around the heart which also gives heart attack type symptoms, very scary and not pleasant so I feel you.

Glad you're mainly ok. Just follow doctors orders though and take it easy.

Great to hear all those other indicators are good.

Eish. Makes my kidney stone look trivial. Sounds like viral myocarditis.
Just take it easy. Bed rest is best. (But no hanky panky).

Sheesh man. So glad to hear it was not a real one.

A good friend of mine had exactly the same thing - Was rushed to hospital with chest pain, etc and it turned out to be a weird viral infection as well.

Was scary but really glad it was not the real deal.

Deep down you know it can't be a heart attack but didn't want to risk it. I know people younger than myself who have suffered a heart attack.

Take it easy dude!

Hey you deserve some ice cream with mini Astros sprinkles.

In animal studies, rats work eight times harder to get sugar than they work to get cocaine. The authors of one study said, “Cocaine reward pales in comparison to sugar.” Another study found that rats continue to eat sugar even after they start to get electric shocks to deter them. Giving a drug to block the effects of heroin (naltrexone) to rats addicted to sugar makes them go into immediate withdrawal. Kelly Brownell from Duke University created a Food Addiction Scale and published a textbook on Food and Addiction.

Cool post.

Rant: It really bothers me that all these great nutrition-focused docs are running about focusing on their own super cheesy personal brands. Personally, I distrust any website that has a guy in a well-lit photograph beaming at me, with "Doctor Professor Ozmando" strewn across the site header, along with large flashing ads for his own books. Yet, these days, this is exactly the sort of site where I'm finding what I feel are sensible thoughts on nutrition and dietary trends. The disparity between the content I'm reading and the trust-signals on the site I'm reading it on becomes overwhelming.

Wouldn't it be great if they'd band together, put aside their book & brand peddling interests, and create a more trustworthy and recognizable alliance/platform of nutrition advocacy. I find that most of these guys already share a lot of the same core values with regard to what is wrong with the food industry, policy, and current diets; and where we should be heading instead. For all the talk of the evils of food industry interests, there's an alarming focus on selling books and other online content.

I agree with you... At the end of the day everybody is out to make a buck.
