Hi Guys

I really need your help on this one. I have been experiencing a very weird ADSl speed issue. Let me start at the beginning.

I stay in Pretoria, on the Erasmuskloof exchange.
I had an 8meg stable line for more than 6 months, running Mweb platinum 10meg uncapped account through Openweb. Line worked fine, no issues.

Openweb stopped reselling the Mweb platinum accounts, so I was moved to a Vodacom Business ADSL 10 meg uncapped account.

Then all hell broke loose....

My line would still sync at 8 meg, but download speeds were very poor (about 10-15k/sec down vs 850k/sec previously). The upload speed would actually work at full speed (+- 55k/sec up).
Contacted ISP and was moved to IS based uncapped account - same problem.
ISP tested both accounts and accounts tested 100% at there end. I also tested the accounts at a different location with full speed. ISP also gave me new accounts for IS and VB - still the same problem.

If I however use a capped IS based account (afrihost free 1gig), then full download speeds anytime.

This sounds very much like a Telkom routing issue to me. Any other ideas?
And more to the point - how do I solve this? The Telkom ADSL helpline is not very helpful. Resetting DSLAM / PORTS did not do a thing.

Anyway, my router connection stats:

Hi Spudman,

Most people don't realize but Uncapped Account Traffic resides in a different pool to Capped Account Traffic. The UAT is often far less stable from a latency point of view than the CAT. The reason for this is that Uncapped users are expected download continuously whereas Capped users or much more respectful of bandwidth as they are paying per GB. So to cut a long story short if you are using Capped you will find a much more consistent line with better latency as opposed to an Uncapped line which depends on the activity in that pool at that moment, if it's getting 'raped' you will notice inconsistent speeds and latency.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
milo

sounds like isp problem.

your line stats seems good, contact mr.beep so he can sort you out.

Hi Milo

Thanks for the input.
I fully understand that UAT and capped resides seperately - for very good reasons.

The issue is just this - why did Mweb platinum uncapped ran flawless and stable, while the other (Vodacom Business and IS) does not? This is very weird to me.
Anyway, have Telkom and ISP looking at it.
Will give feedback when I have any.

I have the EXACT same problem.

The line would slow down to an unusable speed for no apparent reason on all ISP connections. When I reset the router, all is well again and I get full speed again. Simply try reset the router and see if this sorts it out.

Nothing helps till I reset the router. I establish a new pppoe connection on IS and still get the same slow speeds. My main ISP account is webafrica. Reset router and it's fixed.

Absolute rubbish unfortunately, this is an example of posting anything to get post numbers up.

nothing else need to be sed.

1. when did the OP problem started? when he changed isp

2. are line stats still good with new isp? yes it is

3. does capped account run full speed? yes it does

so yeah thats why i posted what i posted.

i am sure mr.beep will sort you out with new account that does run full speed of your line, hes service is always top notch.

Because they changed the routing of your line based on your ISP and because your Uncapped, ive seen it a hundred times.
All ISP policys are the same:

"For our Uncapped accounts, we provide semi-shaped bandwidth. This means that during business hours priority is given to the most important web protocols ( e.g. Internet browsing and email). After hours however there is no shaping on the connection. Uncapped ADSL accounts may be throttled in accordance with our AUP (Acceptable Use Policy)"

Uncapped is literally a bandwidth gamble, you never know what you are going to get.

Mmm

@ hereticangel: I obviously spoken to Mr Beep several times (and still in discussion with him). Tried several different accounts with same problem

@ all:

It is just frustrating that having a R4500+ ISP account with platinum network availibility still gives this poor performance.
Surely the connection between the UAT and my line cannot be to that magnitude to slow this business class connection to below 10k/sec.
