This morning when I used my Telkom landline there was a huge amount of noise
on the line. Now it's almost completely dead, but not totally dead because if
I call it from my cellphone Identicall still registers the number as a missed call.

Now what's even more interesting is that my internet is working perfectly.

I'm 99% sure this is a Telkom fault and I should log it, but is it possible the
problem is on my side?

I've tried disconnecting everything and just hooking up the phones one at
a time, but it doesn't help.

Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks. :)

Telkom Line Fault

Hey, I have had this problem myself & with a few clients.

I was told by more than 1 telkom tech that when there is noise on the phone (providing filters are installed) it could be a good indication that there is some bad/wet/corroded copper somewhere on your line causing crackling noise etc.

Also, ADSL Can actually function reasonably well using just the 1 good wire on your line, unlike the phone which needs 2.

I would definitely log a fault in this case.

Hope this is of some help!

Cheers,

Move the cord on the jack from the phone around if that dont make any difference log a fault as suggested above .
Noise (crackling)on a line is normally an indication of a fault.

Well, the line was perfect yesterday, and today it's not working at all.

It may just be a coincidence, but there was a power failure this morning
around the time the line went down.

It's worth noting that power cuts are very infrequent here, and I can't
remember the last time (if ever) my phone line went down.

Thanks, Ive tried that with two phones and it doesn't help, so I think I'm gonna log
a fault with Telkom.

Update: Telkom came through yesterday to fix it. Apparently the rain was
the cause. Amazingly quick response from Telkom though. :)

Plenty of waterlogged cable joins. Good idea to get in early as next week, after people have woken up that their faulty line won't fix itself, you might have to wait several days for service.

As poster above says, 1 wire is sufficient for ADSL to work, although not all that well
