Well done Telkom

Yes, must say Telkom got it right.

Never had to pay OOB because of this.

“Most usage happens in apps, where we have little or no control, and if we block usage, a customer’s session on whatever app they are using will just stop,” said Asvat.

“In most cases, this leads to frustration and a poor user experience, as customers don’t know why their session has ended.”

WTF Cell C. No sh*t! But that is a lot better than billshock or burning through airtime when OOB! Such corporate BS

Indeed, they should have done like MTN, just refuse to answer any questions until they have thought of a better excuse.

Number 1, Telkom.

Agree. You can also set a bill limit on their portal. IIRC they even have a setting to prevent OOB on data...

Thankfully, most mobile operators warn you via SMS when your data is running low – so you can prevent digging into your airtime balance.

Cell C are good at this. But they could go the full monty and ensure that their patrons are capped or charged exceptionally nominal rates.

I moved over to Telkom Mobile after almost 20 years with Vodacom.

Why o why did I wait so long. My R1.2k Vodacom monthly bill is now R600 on Freeme 20 and I get way more services out of it.

+1
Which would you prefer...
"I can't connect!"
or
"WHAAATTT!!!!???? R100k bill??"

Telkom does charge Out Of Data Bundles. I don't agree with this article. Im on the R149 package 5G but for the past 3 months i was paying around R700. Had to call them to ask them to block it. Im yet to find out this month.

upon bundle depletion, you get redirected to their site where you have to explicitly choose to use OOB data before it touches your airtime. If you're on a data contract, they set a limit (which you can change yourself to w/e you want [compared to VC who sets a hard, unchanging limit of R8k for the first 6 months of your contract iirc]) of a few hundred R's for data/calls. Seems to me someone with access to your wifi chose that option.
Also, the very same site you're redirected to makes it easier to purchase bundles compared to choosing OOB rates.

Be happy, that R700 could have easily ended up being R7000 on the big two networks.

Must say anybody who still leaves it up to the operators is stupid. There are so many options to add on a prepaid bundle that they're just giving them excuses to continue with this practice.
