Well done Telkom

It seems like Telkom has a guy who manually flips the switch every night for the after-hours data to be activated and deactivated again the next morning.

Usually it gets switched off at around 07H02, but this morning he must have overslept, because it was available until 07H15. :D

Meh, if you're on prepaid you never have to worry about OOB. Especially with the likes of Cell C.
Get with the program people.

I see that Cell C also killed off their Data Extenda bundles, probably don't want their customers to keep rolling their data anymore.

Notifications are absolutely useless and should count for nothing.
By the time you get the notification its waaaay too late.
I`ll be moving all the phones i`m paying for to telkom as soon as their contracts end.

Just a shame Telkom cannot offer a decent LTE service. Being capped on 200kbps today while not even making use of their uncapped is not nice play from them.

Vodacom and MTN don't care. Vodacom in their reply talk about the call limits, while had been asked specifically about data bundle OOB.

Telkom did it right.

Cell C tried to do it right, but didn't work:
Cell C Product Development Executive Ishfaq Asvat said it cannot redirect users to a web portal upon data bundle depletion, as very little data is used within a web browser.

“Most usage happens in apps, where we have little or no control, and if we block usage, a customer’s session on whatever app they are using will just stop,” said Asvat.
The answer is wrong. It is true that they cannot redirect to their Website, as it is full of third-party services - that requires third-party traffic. The content they serve depend on these services. Sometime ago they have advertised their Website as zero rated, it didn't work, so they learnt a lesson, but they didn't do anything in the matter. To fix a problem they should setup completely different Website for zero-rated services, but they didn't grow up to this level yet.

Telkom understands people's needs while the other three service providers are all about the business.

So ironic that Telkom is the company getting things right these days. To be fair they have unparalleled experience in getting it wrong to draw on.

Warning on Telkom bundles.

I am on Telkom 200GB LTE month-to-month. Last month I ran out of data and bought two once-off bundles (think 50GB and 100GB). I used some of the data, but when October started and I received my monthly data. Telkom stopped using the bundle data and started using the monthly data. So now I have 50GB of monthly data left, but I first have to finish that data to get to my bundle data which expires prior to the end of the month. So this would mean I have to buy another once-off bundle at the end of the month.

On the once-off bundle terms and conditions it states FIFO will apply (First in, First out). There is nothing in the LTE terms and conditions saying the monthly data takes priority above once-off bundles. So you would think FIFO would apply and since the bundle was loaded last month it should be first... well, not according to Telkom.

No that's not how it works. The earliest expiring bundle gets used first while night data has priority. Their larger 50GB+ bundles have longer validity periods of up to a year so should not get used before monthly data.

This is the reason I moved from Cell C to Telkom.

I was eventually able to prove that Cell C was using up my airtime just BEFORE my data bundle ran out.
In other words, my airtime got depleted even though I still had just over 500KB of data remaining.

Talking to their customer care about it is...... well.... any Cell C customer will know what I'm saying.

You would think that is how they work, but it is not. My first once-off bundle expired on 21-Oct (1 month). Second one is set to expire 30-Oct. When querying this with someone at Telkom Head Office this is the reply I got :mad::mad: :

I have seen your other emails as well now and would just like to clarify this matter.

Just to contextualize the situation:
· Your post-paid data package comes with a set monthly allocated data volume
· This will always be the primary bundle that will be consumed first
· When purchasing once off bundles(which has a specific expiry timeframe) and if not completely utilized will carry over into the next month and expire on the set expiry date.
· When the new month starts, your primary data package will be consumed first and there-after the remainder of the carried over once off bundle if applicable

When referencing point 13 in the following document located at http://www.telkom.co.za/today/media...d_LTE-A_Once_off_Bundles_19072017_dFJPVvg.pdf, it relates to the heading at top of the document:
A. Terms and Conditions for LTE/LTE-A once-off Bundles

13. There is no limit to the number of LTE/LTE-A Once-Off bundles that a subscriber can purchase in a month and FIFO shall apply to the order of consumption.

So this would indicate that if you purchase multiple once off bundles, the FIFO rule in terms of consumption will apply to the Once off bundles only. Thus when your new monthly post-paid allocated bundle has been utilized, this FIFO rule will be applied to your existing carried over once-off bundles purchased.

I trust this would answer the concern below.

It has always been FIFO

As a member who signed up in 2004 on my original account, I would never have dreamed this thread would exist on this forum.

Yeah I figured that. My Giga200 ran out just before my night data ran out. It kept showing a balance yet I couldn't connect to anything and had to buy topup bundles for my miners to keep on working. Miraculously every night at 12 all problems disappeared so I know it was the bundle not being used and not network problems. Shocking how their service is going down.
