I tried everything Apple said here http://www.apple.com/antenna/ and nothing I do will drop signal on my 3G or 3GS (apart from a lead lined box or toilet)

yes that pics might be "fake", but when you are far from a repeater the way you hold a phone will affect the signal.
If it is not the receive signal, it will be the transmit signal.
Also holding it the "bad" way , might use more battery power.

Try checking what the dB says (you can activate it under SBsettings if you're jailbroken) I bet you lose quite a few when you grip it in your hand.
