what anti-virus do you use?

I use AVG free edition. Norton anti-virus is too irritating to use cos of all the resources it chows and how it takes over your pc.

Use to have Norton AV 2004 and Norton Internet Security - terrble on resources. Just switched to F-secure - seems fine but Zone Alarm does not work (wont install) with F-secure.
My expereince with F-Secure in Windoze, is that F-Secure works at a very low-level - that goes for both the F-Secure standalone Antivirus as well as the Antivirus+Firewall - if you open up Device Manager & view all the hidden stuff, you should see a bunch of F-Secure "device drivers" which allows F-Secure to do realtime scanning which is arguably the best out there.

However, all that low-level stuff will take over your Windoze PC and is likely the reason for ZoneAlarm not working. I am assuming here that it is the F-Secure standalone antivirus that you are trying to use with ZoneAlarm, correct? If you have the F-Secure Antivirus+Firewall product [whatever the marketing name is nowadays] and you are trying to use ZoneAlarm as well, then forget it - just use the F-Secure product as is with its integrated firewall...

As a general rule - you should never install & enable more than one antivirus and/or firewall application on a Windoze PC, reason is that they tend to squabble with one another and your PC will experience illhealth as a result...

You might want to check the post above that. :) I'm not throwing away money on anti-virus software at this point in time.

My mom was in her local store getting some software for her iBook and the sales guy starts trying to put the fear in her about how she needs to get ANTI-virus software etc.

So she calls me from the shop on my skype number (she's overseas) to find out what she should do as its her first mac.

I just told her - if the guy can name one OsX virus she can buy the software with a clean conscience. He couldnt. She left without buying anything after giving the manager a piece of her mind and purchased her software from the place next door.

Edit - anti

I did the same last year on one of my PCs and I absolutely hated Trend Micro, but then I was used to F-Secure & decided to use the "free" dingis from ABSA - I regretted it in the end...

well, they did get a cnet editor's choice award, for what it's worth

actually i don't have much hassles with it - was using mcafee before that, which to me seemed to be more resource-hogging (completely subjective opinion, mind you)

and we use nav corporate edition at work, but i see many pc's where all it does is quarantine infected files, and doesn't always seem to be able to clean/delete files (once again my subjective opinion, of course).
