What barcode reading software to use?

We are planning to implement a barcoded system for all hardware that we sell to clients. Each item that leaves our company will have our own barcode on it.


When scanned this barcode must reveal the customer' name, the date the item was sold/handed over etc. etc. It is important also that if this item ever returns to our office for repairs etc., that we can then scan the barcode for info, as well as add the new info re, repairs, dates etc.

I have looked at Redbeam, but it seems that most systems are way overkill for what we need. We do not have stock or warehousing etc.

Any ideas or systems being used out there?

I wrote these systems for my work.They can get quite complicated but for the most part its a very simple thing to implement.
You basically want a system for managing inventory and inventory history?

The inventory module in most accounting packages normally includes what you require.

Why not just use the standard barcodes already in place and linked it to your own database?
