What can one ask for broken laptop?

Yeah ... I'd offer along the line of R700 or so ... its what I currently offer for broken laptops :P

I bought a broken HP 530 for just the screen - cost me R1000... Turns out screen wasn't compaitble in the other broken laptop, so sold the whole lot less the DVD-rw for R650...

Bought another 17" laptop for the screen for my 17" powerbook, best offer i've gotten for the remainders was R750...

Cool, thanks for guidance. I've already had some offers...Gonna confirm with the other half and then put it in the classifieds...

As far as I know, you can trade-in old and broken laptops for brand new ones. I have mine trade-in for a newly assembled desktop computer. They will just subtract the price of the old laptop to the price of the desktop.

Seems that people are only ever really interested in one part of the lappie, to replace whatever has broken on their side, which makes sense..

Any sense in splitting the thing and selling it off in parts? What would be the best split and what to ask for each part?

Case and screen
CPU
RAM
DVD Writer
160GB HDD...

Never give up

As much as that?

In SA YES

Can get a Mobo overseas -- just farm a bit on eBay

Did they tell you what is wrong with the part. Have a contact that can do component repair on Mobo's -- sometimes it is something simple.

Then again I am not seeing anyone in SA advertising being able to do this type of repair

More power to the junk collectors :D

More bucks to the rip-off artists

The whole Laptop scene in SA is DISMAL

It is the onboard graphics chip on the mobo that has gone - apparently a common problem with HP Pavillions. In itself it is quite a simple thing to fix, but apparently because of where it is located inside the lappie, it makes it quite a tricky and intricate job - hence the R4500 we were quoted for the repair...The rest of the mobo is still fine.

Have taken the lappie apart...Any advice on individual prices?
Case+screen
2 x 512MB RAM

You should put it up for sale on some website, eg Mybroadband classifieds, or bidorbuy...

Hehe, I know. That is my intention. I just want to know from you guys what the going rate is for each part first so I know what to price it at!

Otherwise I'd go with the following:
Case+ Screen : R1500
HDD: R300
RAM: R200
CPU + 'dead' mobo : R250
DVD Writer: R200

But these are just estimates...I have no idea when it comes to lappie parts. So I am asking here.

I'm in the same boat as hj2k_x...

I have an oldish Dell Inspiron 6000, Battery is shot and I'm not about to replace it... everything else works just hundreds.

Anyone have any offers, I'm prepared to break it up into pieces if ppl want just a part of it. The Screen is the best part, its 1900x1200 iirc.

PM any offers for the full machine, or if you want a bit of it let me know
