My gf's lappie has died - the motherboard has gone for the 2nd time and IC reckon the warranty has expired...

I am wondering if it is worth selling the lappie for parts, as we have been quoted R4500 to repair it...

It is an HP Entertainment one ( I shall have to get the model number and such at a later stage). There would be no hdd in it, but everything else works fine...15.4' screen, 1GB RAM, dual-core AMD processor, wireless etc..
The lappie is now 2 years old - cost R9000 new...

Is it even worth selling this for spares or should we just write it off/recycle it?

Google around to see what the current prices for the case, keyboard, display are. Then advertise accordingly.

Normally trying to get hold of a second hand case is quite difficult and expensive, so if someone has a broken case they definitely would be interested.

A client broke the left hinge on an Acer and was quoted R1600 for a fix, which she felt was worth taking considering the alternative of buying a new machine. The really good part was that when she got the machine back, it was free of charge as she'd taken an extended warranty and the repair made it by a week!

Naah forget everything and just post it to me.... I'll even let you pay for shipping :p

Yeah post the model number.

Just so we know not to buy the same.
Stay away from AMD laptops in future.

Er... IC "reckon" it's out of warranty? Do you have an inkling otherwise??

Well it broke a year ago, when it was one year old and they swapped out the mobo. Now the mobo has gone again, almost one year later. They reckoned replacement parts are only covered for three months under warranty. Which makes no sense. But that is IC for you...

Well if it was repaired under warranty, that's a load of nonsense.

What is the original warranty period on the notebook when you bought it new?

If you buy a notebook with a 3 year warranty, then if it is repaired under warranty, the warranty must still be valid for the original term. Otherwise they're admitting to using sub-standard parts or performing sub-standard work.

Obviously this is all null-and-void in the following scenario:
1) You bought the notebook with a 1 year warranty
2) The notebook bombed and you took it in for a warranty-repair on the absolute last day that the warranty was valid
3) Incredible says they will only give you 3 months (effectively making the motherboard warranty 1 year and 3 months) on the work done

That's fine, but if it played out a little bit more like:
1) You bought the notebook with an X year warranty
2) The notebook bombed (in Y months) and you took it in for a warranty-repair more than 3 months before X years had elapsed
3) Incredible says they will only give you 3 months (effectively making the motherboard warranty [Y + 3] months) on the work done

then you really need to take it up with them.

I need to clarify the exact facts with the other half but as I understand it, the lappie only had a one year warranty when it was originally purchased and then the replacement mobo was only covered for three months. Apparently.

Well in that case, bravo Incredible :D

Ok, it's an HP Pavillion DV6245eu according to the till slip.

So, what do you think I can ask for it?

How sure are you that it's the hard drive? I'd love to take a crack at it :D

Failing that, the Pavillions are notorious for dying. So there are likely LOADS of people looking for spares (or alternatively, LOADS of people who are already trying to sell their broken notebooks for spares :D ).

If it's definitely the motherboard, then probably R500 - R1000. Selling parts separately would fetch more, obviously.

+1

I have got a broken dv9000. Will never get a laptop without a 3 year warranty again

The drive is fine, it's just the mobo that has died - but we are taking the drive out and putting in an external enclosure to preserve all the data on it.

Sorry, that was a typo. I meant motherboard. Was discussing hard drives with someone as I was posting, lol. My apologies :o

Thing is, that it was the mobo that went a year ago and was replaced....so it does not seem too ridiculous that it should go again - it clearly is a weakness :(

I wouldn't call it a weakness. Is there something specific that makes you think it's the motherboard?

We took it into a PC shop (not IC) and they sent it to HP and they sent us a piece of paper that said it was the mobo and that it would cost R4500 to repair/replace...
