What can your ISP do to make you happier?

They can stop with the lies and obfuscation regarding their products and services.

Call a product what it is - don't hide behind FUPs or AUPs, etc. If they want to limit a product to a certain amount of data, then say so, i.e. 100GB per month.

State simply that this is a home product designed for browsing, gaming, streaming, etc. and that some form of shaping is applied to all accounts and usage beyond a specified threshold (in GBs) will result in a degraded service, i.e. "softcapping".

State clearly which products are designed for p2p or nntp downloads and what the T&Cs are on those services. And if you don't want the "heavy downloaders" on your network, state so clearly.

Business accounts are for businesses and set up accordingly.

This will see the death of "uncapped" accounts as there is no such thing in reality. The amount of data you can consume in a month is finite.

I'm with Vodacom FTTH and its pretty great, one point of improvement would be to just give everyone the full 100mbps line speed and just limit on the cap. Otherwise prices are pretty good, 300GB on the 20mbps line for R799 is a good deal in my books.

With in my usage pattern, my ISP gives what I need. Just not happy to paid for the copper charges from Telkom

1 way to help would be to actually exist in all areas, there are still addresses such as my own that are limited to a maximum line speed of 2 megabytes. Makes it impossible to have growth of you still have crappy infrastructure.

You are referring to network operators. This is about ISPs.

Stop competing for the same areas.
We battled for years to get fibre in Weltevredenpark, and now every other day someone is digging up the pavement laying fibre. WTH?
Pick an area where no one is and lay fibre there. It works in the consumers favour (more coverage) and your own (less competition).
It cannot be that hard.

An API for getting usage stats etc, shouldn't be hard right?

More transparency when there are issues. Nothing makes me more anxious/angry than being kept in the dark when they have issues.

ADSL:

1. Remove the cost for Line Rental. (Telkom).
2. Reduce costs following the IPC cuts already!

FTTH:

1. Everyone should have an open network. For example if I have access to Vodacom fibre, I can pay them a line fee, but want to have data package somewhere else.

I agree - I have uncapped but have to check the download bar all the time and have to tell everyone to slow down, you using too much. Kids get carried away sometimes and you look at that bar creeping towards the red.

Don't cap me when I have uncapped. And work properly dammit.

If I had an ISP other than vodacom I would be happy.

But, no Telkom lines (copper or otherwise) and the rest are edge/non existent at my house.

My VDSL generally works well.

OTOH when I do have a problem customer service - pretty much universally - stinks ... :(

I don't have FTTH experience yet, but what I really want is a stable connection, with reliable upload and download bandwidth. I work from home and the clarity of VOIP calls (usually skype but I also use various others) is critical to me. Upload bandwidth limitations on ADSL has always been an issue, but if it were at least stable and reliable this would make all the difference.

My ADSL line would be a much better friend if I could have better upstream speed.

Roll out FTTH to more middle class suburbs, its just the rich looking for better broadband

Openweb should cancel my line after fighting with them since May to cancel my contract and move my ADSL line to Telkom. They're still holding it hostage until I pay them for a couple months of 'service' which was neither used nor even accessible because they're such a crappy ISP.

I know this is a scary prospect, but just providing a service that you are billed for would be great, if I am paying for 4/5/10/20 Mbps connection, I would at least like assurances that I get these and THEY get penalised when I don't receive this like if I check today( which I do a lot) and I am not even getting HALF my promised speeds, then I deserve a discount, and if this happens for more than 10 days consecutively, then the month is free. I am not talking about fiddly amounts like a 4 Mbps line getting 3 Mbps, I am talking about a 10Mbps line getting like 2\3 Mbps (anything less than 40% seeing as how 40% is a pass in todays education system!)

Pretty happy with Cybersmart - price, speed, redundancy - service/following up though is poor, especially when the Telkom leg is involved.

All you need IMHO for any ISP (and will only work if Telkom has the same):

A ticket page - show the ticket status and history and allow the customer and vendor to add notes - only allow the ticket to be closed on agreement - keep the ticket available for viewing for 5 years.

Hoping for too much, but an SLA - refunds on down time including intermittent connectivity.
