Never... had a old 1992 corolla and yes the answer is pretty much never.
Unless it was abused, overheated or not maintained then it will give problems just like any other engine

+1 on the Kia Cerato Koup. Not many cars at around R200k that will beat it in terms of looks, safety and standard features.

If you looking 2nd hand, i know of:

Two possible responses.

1 - If you mean the flame suit reference, it's 'cos this is a South African forum and this is a motoring thread. I was pretty sure that any suggestions that wasn't VW, Audi, BMW or Mercedes-Benz would be frowned upon.
B - If you mean the automotive suggestions, they would be my choice given the OP's budget.

I've been looking at the Mazda 3, only thing is that its +- 18K more for the model with side airbags.

Tsume, I was in a similar position to what you are in at the moment.

I had a pass me down '98 ford fiesta till early last year when I met up in an accident and the car was a write off - it was a small bumper bashing but the car's value was so low that insurance decided to pay me out rather.

I received R27k from Santam and decided then I wanted to purchase something decent as I was tired of driving a Skoro skoro...

All I can say is that a brand new car is over-rated. I have bought a second hand 2005 Audi A3 2.0 FSI , 75000k on the clock, sunroof, electric everything, 6 speed manual, I seriously could have never made a better choice. The car looks good and drives awesome... Fuel economy is a bit on the higher side of things at about 10.5l/100km on average if you not very light footed.

Its been just about 1 year 6 months and to date I've spent not more than R2500 on maintenance. After 1 and a half years I have done just about 40 000 kms and I have not had any problems whatsoever, I do however have to change tyres which will set me back not more than R4000. Its definitely not the same for everyone. People try to make a buck off you and try to sell you cars that have been in accidents but if you want a good deal definitely look at 2nd hand.

I paid R135 000 for my car, put down a R20 000 deposit, my premiums are R2400. My fiance paying a bit more on premiums for a polo vivo and trust me driving a smaller, brand new car comes nowhere close to driving a decent 2nd hand car.

My advise would be to go do extensive research. Stay away from Turbo's out of maintenance plan and go look at the vehicle you would not believe how clean the car I bought was, it was like brand new.
 
Okay, I think I've settled on the Cerato Koup. But then got to thinking, my current place of living, the underground parking bays are just terrible. I dont know how many times I have nearly dinged the car next to the pillars trying to navigate out. It takes me like 5 minutes to get out of there. I will be moving out by the end of the year. But I cant hold on to the stress no longer which occurs every time I try to go out.

The merc is not suitable for such small spaces, nor will the Cerato be.
So here is what I'm thinking. I should sell the merc and look for a very small car, so I guess I'm gonna have to go with some hatchback. Something reliable, which I can exchange or sell easily in the near future.

chewme if i were you then i would rather hold out until you move, for all you know you could buy a dud and chances are you will lose money selling the small car for your trade in when you are ready to upgrade.

I've been doing a lot of thinking and I think the Cerato Koup is out of my price range. I need to settle on a car by the end of this year and go shopping for one next year. Though I didn't want a hatch back it seems like these type of cars are in my price range. I might be going back to my studies next year so I'll need a good reliable car.

I see the Polo hatch is going for R2K per month. My cousin owns one and has no complaints.
Any other good cheaper cars you guys can think of?

so then what is budget?

if you wanna stay under say R160 then what about

i20
new rio

or sedan you can do new accent

other options as well , some cheaper ones as well

If you want an excellent deal then go for the i20, if you want affordable German quality then look at the Corsa Essentia.
