I can scrap some money from other places as well, so let's not include insurance for now.
No, its cheaper to maintain than the KIA, at least while on Motorplan. All BMWs (and Mercs and Audis) carry a 5 year motor plan which covers almost everything, even your services. So as long the car has less than 100000km you'll get away much cheaper.

Sure it's cheaper if you can afford to buy the damned thing in the first place!
A person looking at Kia or Hyundai is not in the same league as someone looking at a BMW. (i.e. not looking to spend the same on HP every month)
What you are effectively saying, is that you should spend 5000/month on an HP instead of 1500/month, so that you can save on maintenance costs....
The talk on the first page was about a car in the region of 200k. A year old 320i goes for around 215.

Went to test drive the Kia Rio. Awesome car, but I just remembered why I don't like hatchbacks, you can't see the hood of the car and I'm use to driving cars where I can see the hood. Also the foot pedals are small, I don't know if I would be able to deal with that. Except for those 2 issues it's a really good car.

Was the ride hard/smooth?
general kit/feel of the cars quality?
Can you see out the rear view mirror fine?
How are the stock speakers?
I think im going for the standard 1.4(non TEC) model

The ride was real smooth. I had the sound system quite low so I could concentrate on the ride.
For what you get with the general kit is a lot for an entry level car, seemed solid. I had to keep adjusting the rear view mirror a few times, but once I got it right it was okay. But if your like me the small foot pedals become a disadvantage because you accidently end up putting your foot down on the gas pedal, so it required me being so gentle with my foot.

I saw it in many colours and black is still the most beautiful. A friend of mine got his on 17/11/2011 and I must say, I don't think there is anything to compair to this car in it's price range...
Seriously impressed with the Kia Rio 1.4 tec and will probably be my next buy come Feb 2012. Simply the best value for money in its class in my laymen opinion. I am somewhat terrified of this choice though as I have always had negative perceptions about Kia's in general. Could anyone who owns a Kia weigh in on what I am to expect once the deal has been signed and the charm offensive by the Kia establishment stops dead in its tracks?

Got the GF the new picanto, no issues at all, granted it is still basically new.
Helped my mom when she bought her sorento, still no issues and goes great.
Remember they are part of the imperial group

Yep.. The old KIA's weren't pretty but thankfully the company has seen a 180 degree turn around since being bought over by the Hyundai Motor Group, now called the Hyundai Kia Motor group which is now the worlds 4th largest motor manufacturer after Toyota, GM and VW. The cars themselves are designed in Germany under the lead of Peter Schreyer - Ex Audi lead designer.
The company is also growing rapidly in South Africa but are still considered an emerging brand so are priced right and feature packed. I was also apprehensive at first but after nearly a years worth of research settled on the new Cerato which I have now had for 13 months. 23500KM later and still very happy with her, service at KIA Paarden Eiland has been great. I unfortunately had a small accident and parts weren't a problem at all.

Am at a cross road. Maybe Im attached to my current car or is it the german luxury. I'm not sure if I should go for a new car or fix up my current car.
My current car, 1999 Merc C220, its about to reach 500000km which is the main reason i would want to get a new car.
I can think of things of my hed which are problematic:
loss of power, wheel alignment, central locking not working, leaking of water for engine
I think it was the size adjustment which turned me away from hatchbacks but at this stage there is no choice.
On that note what is your view on the hyundai accent?

Hyundai accent is awesome IMO! Haven't driven one but I beleive it is the same engine as my i20
