Hi guys, I know this question is asked all the time, but i dont know what rig to buy. Firstly i want to spend about R5K, I have Case, monitor, keyboard and mouse, just looking for mobo, ram, new HD, cpu and Gfx. This will be a gaming machine.

I have put together 2 systems both come to just over R5K, but now what is the better choice, or is there possibly something better than these 2. One is Intel / geforce and the other AMD / ATi.

Intel/Geforce

Core 2 Duo E4600 2.4Ghz (800FSB 2MB)
Intel Buffalo creek mobo
1 GIG DDR II 800
250GB-7200RPM 8MB Cache
Geforce 8800GT 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI TV-Out -XFX/Asus

AMD/ATi

Athlon 64 X2 5600+ (PIB) 2.3Ghz, 2x1MB L2 Cache Dual Core, HT2000
Asus nforce 570 SLi
2 GIG DDRII 800
250GB-7200RPM 8MB Cache
Radeon 3870 512MB DDR4 PCI-E Dual DVI /TVO

Thanks in advance

PS: Whats better - Geforce 9600GT 650Mhz 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI XT Edition
OR Geforce 8800GT 512MB DDR3 Dual DVI TV-Out -XFX/Asus

8800GT klaps the 9600, rather go for the intel machine even though the mobo sucks :p

also why a sli board for the amd when listing an AMD card, far better and cheaper boards i am sure

Whats wrong with Intel/ATI ;)

8800GT is better than a 9600GT

I havent bought a new machine for a few years, so i am not sure what components should go with what......Sli Board for amd when listing an AMD card?

If that Intel board is ***, what would you suggest? Are intel boards not great in general?

I know my last machine i bought a cheap mobo and I had to replace it with a new one, and that one has died now, so i dont really want to go cheapy. :)

Nothing, personally I am a fan of Ati, my last card (RIP) was the Ati 9600Xt and i loved that apposed to the Geforce range at the time....It seems though that the general gaming community go for Geforce. I think Ati might be a better bet.

Oh, and with regards to the board, it's not THAT bad a board, but you need to have a look at the chipset. The Buffalo Creek board has a G33 chipset. For games (as far as I know) you should look at trying to get a Pxx series chipset on your board.

Got a freind with a G31 Q9300 & HD3870 everything runs just fine :) jus that the G31 kind of holds it back, no options to OC :(

ASUS AMD Socket AM2, nForce 570 SLI, 2000MT/s, 4xDual DDRII, 2xPCIx16, 2xPCIx1, 3xPCI, 1xATA133, 6xSATAII(Raid 0,1 0+1,5), Dual Gbe Lan, 8ch-Sound, Max 10xUSB, 2xIEEE1394, ATX
Athlon 64 X2 5400+ (PIB) 2.4Ghz, 2x1MB L2 Cache Dual Core, HT2000
2GB DDRII-800
250GB-7200RPM 8MB Cache
HD 3850 1G GDDR3 PCI-E GDDR3 PCI-E DUAL DVI-I / TVO

What you think of that setup?

Why not go with a C2D E7200 + HDxx/88GT/96GT :)
That 1GB in the HD3850 is not going to help much unless it's about the same price as the 512Mb ver.

Hmm yeah maybe the C2D will go better.....

I was considering these 2 cards:

Radeon 3850 512MB DDR3 PCI-E DVI-I /TVO - Sapphire R1708.86

HD 3850 1G GDDR3 PCI-E GDDR3 PCI-E DUAL DVI-I / TVO R2164.86

The 9600gt performs better than the 3850, and is the same price.

Intel boards can't OC for crap usually, ..and you're going to want to OC Core2 chips!!

Ye if ur serious about gaming, ur not gonna want anything less than a 8800gt 512.

Awkward time to buy tho since the 4850 is coming out in a couple weeks.

4850? Is that a Geforce card? Do you think prices are going to come down on the current cards??

It's the ATI 4850, and apparently should outperform the 8800gt by anywhere from 26% - 48% depending on the game. Apparently averagely 10% faster than a 9800gtx.
Proposed for $229 at launch.
