What difference would it make

So I have a question, and its probably a stupid one. But what difference would me on a 2mb line with Telkom be, and say with me on a 2mb line with another ISP.

I'm not gonna mention capped or uncapped, but just a general question when it comes to connectivity etc. Would I get better connections with another ISP who handles the line, or does it not matter, and it is what it is.

I'm a bit annoyed, that Telkoms coverage map showed me only able to get a 2mb line, but I could possibly get to 10mb. So I signed up for a 2mb line, and maybe I should have done a bit more research so I'm partially to blame. Be that as it may, I can upgrade to 4mb, or would my question above make any difference?

Thanks

Always leave your line with Telkom.

@iceman
Great question. It's been on my mind for ages.

@chevron
Why should we leave the line with telkom?

easier for telkom staff to manage your line when you need faults escalated etc.

having it with an isp creates a whole world of hassle

I assume that an ISP's support staff has access to the same tools that the telkom support staff have.

You'd assume completely wrong, ISP support staff have no where near the same level of reporting and diagnostics that telkom staff have.

You know MickeyD, it just saves me having to spend hours trying to get through to Telkom :)

Recharge with R100 or more on a Telkom Mobile prepaid account and you will get R10k funeral cover to soften the blow of having to listen to the "on hold" muzak !!

hahaha,.. look its just something i wanted to know, because one would assume, that if you move your line to another ISP, that something would be done differently. as an example i made, how would say Vox or CW improve my 2mb line, if i had to move the line from Telkom to them.

There would be no improvement in your physical line.

And that you don't have to deal with the Telkom call centres.... you phone your ISP and they must do it for you! :D

thats fine Mickey, i understand that, and thats the cool side of it. But its really interesting, that there is no change in performance when moving to another isp, as the line you are on would determine things for you, irrespective if you have migrated the line away from Telkom.

At this stage, on the copper side, only Telkom has an access network so physically there is no migration. If the ISP was to build more POPs around the country then your service would definitely improve, i.e. lessen their reliance on Telkom's network by connecting to their own network links as soon as possible. But that is all being bundled with LLU an facilities leasing. With the 'explosion' on fibre to the home, many operators are not really that focussed on LLU any more and would actually prefer for it to be stalled for as long as possible. This so that they can lure customers onto their fibre networks!

Neotel do have copper networks but they are limited to ports, airports and railway properties (somebody can correct me if this has since changed).

Wrong! They generally tell the customer to call Telkom in any case because as you know, its always Telkom's fault.

interesting, and thanks for clearing that up. i was looking at the various offers from Crystal, Vox, Afrihost, and data portion im happy to sign up with either of them, or who ever gives me the best value for money. But, if what you are saying above is correct(and it probably is), then how does the ISP's handle line performance, when they have in theory no control over that line? do they remotely have access to the users line or do they contact Telkom tecchies to have a look

They report fault like anybody else would. Get a reference number and pass that on to the customer.
