I shot a series of technical training videos for BHP Billiton's Khutala colliery in Mpumulanga back in 2012. They just received their new Kumatsu robotic continuous miners (along with other equipment), and needed a comprehensive training video on the operation and safety thereof.

It was quite the experience being underground for a week. They have an entire little underground town with medical stations, maintenance bays, food stations, restroom facilities etc... just for one power station. Just to travel to the active coal seam took an hour of underground driving at a depth of around 400-500 meters to get there.

The mine's sole purpose is to supply Eskom's Kendall power station with coal.

These are screengrabs from the video. Was the last time I shot on videotape and remember having continual issues with the tape sticking to the heads in the camera due to the extreme humidity underground. Glad those days are gone.

Those continuous miners are quite something especially where coal is concerned.

The drive for Tele Remote is picking up there as well, Sanvik is ahead in that field for the foreign market.

Love it? - meh, I just push out code for the sake of it (Work for big corporate, so new product all day every day)
Why?- well it pays the bills and some extra for spending.
 
Code/maths/finance/hardware - it’s a party.

All your jobs sound interesting,I repair and refurb copy machines. I used to setup new copiers as well but not much money in the economy now so we sell mostly second hand equipment now.
 
Work for myself , i see no reason why I would want to work for anyone really I would just bump heads as most people do not have the drive and create endless amounts of red TAPE.
